You could find dozens in the E. Village. Pick up a Time Out NY magazine when you arrive.

is Mod a bar or restaurant? If restaurant, what type of food do they serve?

Spice Market on W. 13th Street is one of the hottest restaurants right now. You probably won't be able to get reservations for dinner, instead, go to the downstairs bar. I love the decor - looks straight out of India. There are lots of little tables and soft armchairs down here...you can order a bunch of appetizers (the theme is Asian) and delicious cocktails.

This whole area, around W 14th and 9th Ave, is known as the Meatpacking District and is full of hot new bars & restaurants...you should definitely check it out!

Jekyll and Hyde Club at 1409 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan, near Central Park. Their website is:

I've gone there on both of my trips to NYC. It's busy, fun and weird (moving eyes on the walls), but I pity the tallest person in your group. :-"

Are you serious, dwoodliff? My partner and I went to Jekyll and Hyde for lunch. It was an annoyingly loud place geared for kids under 10. The food was dreadful. The screaming "entertainment" was of a 15 IQ mentality. Half way through lunch a woman next to us, who was with a friend and their several young kids, turned to us and said, "do you mind if I ask, why are you two here?" I couldn't think of a possible answer. That was my worst experience in New York. By the way, these places could be fun -- I'm thinking The Adventurer's Club at Disney, but this place was dismal.

Yes, Patrick, I'm serious. I thought it kind of fit the description of funky. The first time I went was with a friend and our kids. The 2nd time was with a group of friends, ages 25-55. No, it isn't "gourmet" food, but it WAS fun, and we all enjoyed it!

OK, I get the point. We both kept saying, "if we had a group and enough drinks we'd probably be laughing right now." Unfortunately there were just two of us and we weren't drunk enough to enjoy it.

Patrick: You said, "OK, I get the point." Does that mean YOU are taller than your friend? :)

A good place for Breakfast/ Brunch or lunch late night food and at Dinner with drag show an inexpensive and good food Is Stingy Lulu's On St Marks Streetin the east Village near the end by avenue A They have an edgy, young crowd, cross-dressing waiters and rave beats that St. Marks is known for are all housed in this classic diner filled with vintage memorabilia. The restaurant features a bar-counter eating area and numerous booths, and wraps around the back into the funky neighboring club of the same name. Service is good when it's not too crowded and the waiters aren't doubling as drag-queen divas (they perform only on Friday and Saturday nights around 10pm).
its just a short walk From McSorleys ale house (a must do )on 7th street between 2nd &3rd ave and also the telephone bar on second avenue

This is a somewhat bizarre group of places. I think we need a definition of funky. If you mean just "in" places the meatpacking district is loaded with them (that's where Spice Market is). The rooftop bar at the Gansevoort Hotel or the Soho House are very trendy.

It would help to know how old you are dotwest and your meaning of funky.
