Fun weekend in NYC, including a GTG
I spent Friday through Sunday in NYC, part of it with other Fodors posters, who I will not name, but they are welcome to name themselves!
<b>Transportation</b> There is an Amtrak station 5 minutes from my house in the Phila. suburbs, and I can be at Penn Station in NYC in a bit over 2 hours...very convenient. <b>Hotel</b> www.iroquoisny.com Most of use stayed at the Iroquois, after finding a reasonable rate there months ago. <b>Friday</b> Arrived 11am, walked to the Iroquois to drop of my bag, and took a bus uptown to have lunch at a sentimental favorite: www.neuegalerie.org/cafes/sabarsky Then to the Met, where I spent some time in a new Cubism exhibit: http://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions...der-collection and wandered through the impressionist gallerys. Back to the bus for a visit to Mood Fabrics: www.moodfabrics.com Unfortunately, it was just too crowded and warm to concentrate on what I wanted to find, so I left empty-handed, but not before spotting Swatch, the store Boston terrier mascot. Back to hotel to check in and rest a bit before the evening's GTG at a fellow Fodorite's apt.: Marvelous host, wonderful food, great company, and a surprise visitor from Fodors! Just perfect. <b>Saturday</b> Busy day with most of the group present. We started with the best walking tour I have ever taken, including London and San Francisco: www.foodsofny.com/greenwichvillage.php We all loved our guide, Sephrah. She was great! After the tour, most of us walked to: www.chelseamarket.com and then: www.thehighline.org/visit Dinner was another GTG at: northsquareny.com Completely wonderful, again. <b>Sunday</b> Most of the group went to the WTC museum, but I decided I couldn't manage that. I did my own thing that day, and really filled it up: www.tenement.org/tours.php I took the HARD TIMES tour, and really loved it. Had lunch nearby at: www.cafekatja.com and dessert at: doughnutplant.com Back to mid-town, where I strolled around Bryant Square before seeing: beautifulonbroadway.com Very meaningful to me and really fun. Loved it. Afterwards, I walked back to the restaurant next to the hotel: www.dbbistro.com/nyc where I had a delicious Coq au Vin. Picked up my bag at the hotel, and walked back to Penn Station. Everything fell into place really nicely on this weekend...even the weather cooperated! It was nice to see Fodorites I had met before, and some new ones, too. Wouldn't change a thing! ~Liz |
It sounds wonderful!!! Glad you had a good time with good people and good weather!
|
Nice Liz!

Thanks for sharing your fun week-end in NYC. We like the Iroquois Hotel; in fact, 44th St. is our fave place to stay. We also enjoyed "Beautiful". In the TR of our spring trip, we described why the play was well-timed for us. Glad that you had a nice weather week-end. NYC is always fun, isn't it, and we always return home eager for our next visit.

The pictures looked great! Y'all had so much fun! Hope there's another one next year. :-)
|
We were also treated with a special guest at our host's apt. on Friday night. It was a real pleasure to meet Emily from Fodor's - an official with whom many of you are familiar! The whole trip was wonderful!
|
It was wonderful hosting you all. Would love to see some pictures from the evening as I promised to forward them to Fodor's and the kind souls who provided the goodies.
|
How fun! Thanks for posting a trip report.

Nywoman, they are on FaceBook.

I go to NYC 2-3 times a year, and I saw so much new (to me) stuff this trip. I had never been to Grand Central Station before. The 9/11 Museum was incredibly emotional. The Morgan Library is beautiful - I didn't realize there was so much to see there (great museum store, too). I had heard that the High Line trail was extended - but I didn't realize how long that extension was.
Many thanks to the organizers for all their work. Well done! |
Great trip report, elberko! I'm glad everything worked out so well.
|
Sounds like a lovely trip! I'm happy to know everyone enjoyed the Foods of New York/Greenwich Village tour--when DD and I were there in May 2012, that's the tour we did and we had a great time. We also went to the Tenement Museum; I recommend both any time I get the chance.

elberko - sounds like a really great weekend! I was supposed to be in NYC this coming weekend but a professional obligation meant we had to cancel our trip:(
I don't have facebook so can't see the photos, but your report is so nicely delineated with links and all. You should give trip report workshops!! I am especially interested in the food tour and Mood fabrics. Will add to my next trip into the city. I am a big highline fan and look forward to walking the new extension. I also have avoided the WTC memorial. I suppose I will go one day with my daughters who consider that day the most indelible memory of their childhoods. But for now I just don't feel ready. Thanks again for posting here about the GTG. I sure wish I could have been with you all! |
Thanks, gruezi. It would have been nice to see you again, too.
|
So fun! Sorry I missed it! Thanks for posting the TR - the photos are so great!
|
Fun report, thanks for sharing! What were your thoughts on the Iroquois?
|
The Iroquois was quite nice, no complaints. The location was convenient and the room was comfortable.
|
Yikes!i. I seem to have lost my connection to the Fodor'S group on Facebook. Is that where I could see the photos?
Thanks for any help. |
Yes, taconictraveler.
|
Thanks, elberko. I managed to re-apply and got on the newer site. Didn't know it had changed. Been away from Fodor's for a while.
So do I look for YOU on that Fodor's Facebook group? |
