Fun Family Restaurants in D.C. area

Hi all - due to some semi-poor planning and a crazy itinerary - we're staying in 4 hotels in 9 days........3 nights at the Capital Hilton, 2 in Williamsburg, 1 at the Grand Hyatt in D.C., and 3 at the Sheraton National in Arlington. What restaurants located near any of these hotels (not including Williamsburg) might be fun for a family but won't break the bank?

If you have a car, it's a short drive to Alexandria from the Sheraton to Generous George's. It's on Duke Street outside Old Town Alexandria, and is about as family friendly as you can get. Kids love the place, it's cheap, and you get tons of food. And for the parent who's not driving, you can get really big glasses of beer.

Ann41 has given you an excellent suggestion! Another is Maggiano's - it's an Italian chain with HUGE portions and great food. It is at the Friendship Heights metro station near the MD border.

Near the Grand Hyatt is the Austin Grill which has Southwestern style food. It is located on E St between 7th & 8th.

If you're in the area on a Sun, I recommend Georgia Brown's for brunch. It is on 15th St near K St, which is right near the Capital Hilton. It is a splurge at $29.95 per person, but you get an all you can eat Southern buffet with pecan french toast, key lime pie, peach cobbler etc plus you choose an entree afterwards that you can just get to go. You can then have that for dinner!

The Old Ebbitt Grill, a short distance from the White House, so not too far from the Capital Hilton. Big, noisy, crowded and fun. Pretty good food at a fairly reasonable price.

How many and how old? Will you have a car? Any particular likes or dislikes? Do you want help with Williamsburg too?

sprin2 - My daughter is 12 so we're pretty mobile except no car. Relying on Metro. Sure - any help for Williamsburg would be great! We'll be at the Marriot near Busch Gardens in W'burg.

And thanks to everyone for your suggestions so far!

The Sheraton is near Columbia Pike, which has some great ethnic food like Matuba (2915 Columbia Pike) sushi, and Bob and Edith’s Diner. Near the Clarendon metro try Facia Luna (pizza) 2909 Wilson Blvd., or Mexicali Blues (Mexican / Tex Mex) 2933 Wilson Blvd. and get dessert at the Lazy sundae. 2925 Wilson Blvd. This is a nice area to stroll after dinner. In DC we really like Pizzeria Paradiso (3282 M St. or 2029 P St) or 2 Amys (Wisconsin and Macomb near the National Cathedral) for pizza. Any of the Austin Grills (the Hyatt is near the 750 E St. location) are good food and atmosphere. Two other local chains that are good and not expensive are Hard Times (chili) and Five Guys (burgers). Highly recommend both of these.

In Williamsburg we love lunch at the Cheese Shop, now on Duke of Gloucester St. Get sandwiches and wander into a garden in CW for a picnic – you can enter any gate that is not locked. The outside area at Barretts is another nice stop near CW. Pierces has good barbecue, although with no car it is difficult to get to. We also like Second St., good American food, with a welcoming atmosphere, and usually good service.

Try Mimi's in Dupont Circle. Good food, reasonable prices - and staff sings during dinner. sounds cheesy but was actually pretty good and fun
