Are American Airlines full fare coach tickets automatically upgraded to first class when space is available?

In fact, you may even get stuck in a middle seat in the back of the plane.

American didn't upgrade me this morning even though my ticket was full fare. They did give me a nice aisle seat in coach. American's coach is very nice and is almost "business class" as far as domestic seating goes.
