Ft. Myers Beach in August

My husband and I are planning a 7 day trip to Ft. Myers Beach, staying at the BW Beach Front Hotel. We're interested in swimming and relaxing, possibly doing a bit of sighseeing. Worried that we're nuts to be going to Florida in the summer, but it's all we have right now..

No kids, just the two of us. Any suggestions for swimming? Is snorkeling a possibility? Kayaking?

Thanks for any advice.

We stayed at the BW last May. We only stayed for 2nts and 3 days. There was at the time a boardwalk. They have a booth set up where they offer tours. You may want to check that out. There is the Everglades tour. We took the Key West Ferry from Ft.Myers to Key West for a day. It is a long ride 4 hours one way, and it leaves you with 5 hours in the Keys as I recall. Take a drive over to Sanibel Island. Not sure about snorkeling tours as we were not there that long.

For the sightseeing, why not visit the Edison and Ford museums? As for swimming, last week in St. Pete Beach, just a bit north, the water temp. was 88 degrees. I like my water warm, so I thought it was great! Naples is nearby and it has a great downtown with lots of little shops, restaurants, and galleries. Walking the pier is also fun. Once we went to Naples in the end of July and it was actually one degree cooler there than the Midwest where we live! Not that it still wasn't hot, but heck, summer is summer and a vacation is still a vacation!

Plan on rain about every afternoon. Hopefully, you won't get a tropical storm. I spent 20 yrs visiting parents in the area- there are many nice stores in Naples, some good shopping at Bell Tower in Ft Myers. Ditto the Edison House- very interesting. Captiva/Sanibel are worth a beach day.For a GREAT seafood dinner, try the Prawnbroker. Don't waste your time snorkeling- there's nothing to see! Waters are murky in the Gulf and there's no coral...just sand bars! If you want a peaceful, beautiful beach, go to Vanderbilt Beach at Wiggin's Pass. It's a state park- requires entrance fee, but keeps riff raff out of area. Nice natural beach, nature reserve, trees, sea grapes, picnic areas. Bathrooms clean, outdoor showers by parking area.
