when you are flying over the Gulf, you can see little floating islands of red tide. It is an algae bloom that occurs from too much nutrient in the water. (I took a sabbatical for a few years trying to solve problems such as this). No one wants to point to the source but it is basically from excess nitrogen run off. A lot comes down the Mississippi river and spills into the gulf. It gobbles up the oxygen in the water and basically suffocates the fish. It usually floats in small islands and when it gets near shore it spreads with the tide action. (This is a very basic and simplified explanation) It is disgusting and is harmful to shell fish. This year has not been particularly bad for it. You can check the reports at Mote Marina as the tourist boards in most cities are loathe to have publicity on it. LMF

Thanks, LMF... I always wanted a concise definition of "red tide" and I'm glad I got one. Also, thanks to Birder for the heads up that it doesn't always hit the entire area at the same time.

Thank you LilMisFoodie for the info on the heron bird. I would flip out if that bird came near my chair for a snack. I'm also glad to know Sanibel is a bird paradise. I'm petrified of birds. Maybe this isn't the place for me. Don't want a ruined vacation. Any other tropical places other than Ft.Lauderdale to recommend? Maybe I should just stick with Ft.Lauderdale. I did enjoy my last trip there. Loved the Marriott Harbour Beach Resort.

I don't think Sanibel is for you at all. I love it there but don't expect everyone to. Harbor Beach is one of my favorites. I love 3030 Ocean there and think it one of the best restaurants in Fort Lauderdale.

You could go a little north and stay in one of the resorts in Palm Beach. Good museums (Norton, etc). There are some areas to shop that are not just more malls like Ft L. I shop for a living (interior designer) and I am bored with the big malls and the national chains that are the same the world over.

I'm always looking for different places, thats why I prefer South Beach and some of the funkier areas of the Palm Beach area.

You can't go wrong with your interests however, with Harbor Beach.

Marriott's Harbour Beach Resort. A little off to the right after you go over the 17th st. bridge onto the Fort Lauderdale key. This chef is great and still a litte undiscovered.
