FS Maui - Construction Alert

FYI: I received a call from the Four Seasons last Friday informing me that they are beginning construction on the Spa center and Ferraro's. Construction begins Sept 3 and continues through December. Some spa services will not available, others will be available in one of their ballrooms. FS will not compensate you at this time. Unfortunately, I have my honeymoon reservation there for Sept 2 - 9. They do not know what times of day the construction will be going on but it will be heard from the pool/beach and maybe even your room.

amy Jul 2nd, 2002 10:35 AM

WE have booked our honeymoon for the FS as well during the week of Sept 1- Sept 8. My travel agent seems to think it will not be too much of an impediment...

Jenny Jul 2nd, 2002 11:31 AM

That's good to hear! :-)

thanks Jul 2nd, 2002 12:02 PM

Assume the spa could still do the massages on the beach? Any thoughts?<BR><BR>I did email the hotel regarding any noise issues or other disruptions.<BR><BR>Thanks for the heads up.

Jenny Jul 2nd, 2002 12:20 PM

I assume they still can on the beach. The only thing they told me was that they would be available in the ballroom and in your own room.

amy Jul 2nd, 2002 01:17 PM

I can't imagine that the four seasons would jeopordize their stellar reputation....the massages will go on and I bet we won't even know that there is construction going on. This is the four seasons, not the holiday inn!

Bill Jul 5th, 2002 11:11 AM

I just talked with Four Seasons (800 number). I was informed that guests in Sept. and Oct. '02 will receive a $50.00 per day credit to be used in the hotel. I was told that it may be "noisy" in the mornings.<BR><BR>I have a reservation for my honeymoon on Sept. 15-20. I am now considering a different hotel.

TJ Jul 8th, 2002 06:16 AM

Does anyone know if the fitness center will be open during the renovation? Sounds like spa services can be done elsewhere, but like to be able to work off those big dinners.

amyg Jul 8th, 2002 10:15 AM

the letter said that the fitness center would be open and that the only closures would be the steam room and some locker rooms

g Jul 8th, 2002 10:27 AM

I am arriving at the FS Maui on Sept 8-14 for my honeymoon also and am very concerned about this construction. <BR><BR>I was not notified about this construction. Any ideas why I was not told? I really hate the idea of jackhammers rattling and lots of noise when I'm sitting at the pool. I want to call them to talk about the potential problem.

amyg Jul 8th, 2002 11:58 AM

G-<BR>i was informed by my travel agent who booked the vacation for us. THe construction is limited to the spa area and will not interfere with guests, as stated in the letter and as they told me on the phone. I don't think it' much to worry about

Bill Jul 9th, 2002 01:18 PM

My travel agent received the formal written notification from Four Seasons. It sounded very ominous. When a hotel agrees to reimburse guests in advance, it's a good indication that the construction will cause a considerable inconvenience to guests. As a result, I have cancelled my reservation at the Four Seasons from Sept. 15-20th. In fact, I have completely changed my honeymoon plans. I am skipping Maui in favor of Kauai. We will be staying in a Junior Suite at Princeville (for less than the FS due to 5th night free promo). Thoughts?

xxx Jul 9th, 2002 01:39 PM

Heard great things about Kauai and debating on doing the same (booked there at end of November so not sure if it will be better by then). <BR><BR>Kauai is less commercial than Maui (ie possibly less to do) but think it's more nature / hike oriented and should be great for a honeymoon. Friend just got back and highly recommended

amyg Jul 10th, 2002 08:53 AM

the letter actually said nothing about reimbursement and when I called the 1800 number, they knew nothing of such a reimbursement...

awfly Jul 10th, 2002 01:57 PM

Just got my message from the 4S Maui, where I am (was?!) staying for 8 days during my honeymoon on Maui.<BR><BR>Among the highlights:<BR>"improvements start 9/3 and will continue for 'several weeks'"<BR><BR>"there may be noise during the day, and at times excessive noise as they, um, prepare to, um, enlarge those two areas"<BR><BR>"the health spa will remain open in a relocated area"<BR><BR>"ferraro's restaurant is closing, but our two other restaurants will still serve their full menus"<BR><BR>funny thing, they never used the word "construction" once. <BR><BR>I'm so disappointed.<BR><BR>THIS SOUNDS AWFUL. The health spa is simply the back breaker for me. I intended to literally spend hours in the gym every day, and using the steam/sauna/yoga, etc was high on my list of reasons to book the Four Seasons. I'm sure that all of these things will be available in a basement room on the property that has all the romance of a dungeon. I'm sure that I'll be able to work out, but I was really looking forward to working out "in style".<BR><BR>I'm canceling my reservation.

xxx Jul 10th, 2002 02:01 PM

Let's put it in perspective people. I'm booked there also, but you're acting like they're going to set you up in tents out back by the parking lot. If they didn't upgrade the hotel you'd complain about that also.<BR><BR>Our decision is to stay there (making sure our room is far from the construction) and working out and using the spa at the Grand Wialeah. Still would rather stay at the FS than the larger properties.

awfly Jul 10th, 2002 02:06 PM

Just got off the phone with reservations at (800) 334-6284 x59 (Maui Four Seasons direct #) and they said the following additional items<BR><BR>$50 credit per day per room during the length of the construction<BR><BR>barriers put up around the construction (yuck)<BR><BR>relocating the spa and the weight room<BR><BR>cardio room is in the same location (thus making my sweaty body have to trudge across the resort inbetween workout)<BR><BR>they will try to host special promotions such as beach BBQs to make up for the lack of Ferraro's<BR><BR>noise from 9am to 5pm every day<BR><BR>i can cancel my room up to 14 days in advance. <BR><BR>i have asked them to switch my reservation to 4S Big Island but was unable to confirm availability at this time due to being directly in touch with Maui.

Noway Jul 10th, 2002 02:10 PM

I agree. I think it sounds awful too. I don't have reservations there but if I did, you can bet I'd change them. Lots of other luxurious properties to choose from..

relax Jul 10th, 2002 02:34 PM

awfly:<BR>If you are planning to spend "literally, hours" of your vacation in a gym, why bother even going to Maui? What a waste of money! Maybe it would be a better honeymoon if you went to your local Gold's Gym. Cheaper too!

awfly Jul 10th, 2002 02:39 PM

sounds like your fat ass hasn't seen a gym in years. It's lots of fun to spend time in the gym, especially a nice gym. Doing yoga with my bride was something that we both very much looked forward to. <BR><BR>the main issue here is that I made my plans unaware of these "improvements" and now I'm in the final wedding planning stages and I'm not pumped up to have to search for a new hotel, especially this close to the honeymoon when availability is certain to be low and prices much higher than when i made my reservation.

awfly Jul 10th, 2002 02:40 PM

also, luxuriating ourselves in the complementary steam and sauna rooms was certainly something that is nicer to do at the 4S rather than Gold's, but certainly I'm sure that you'll take issue with this<BR><BR>

destinfl Jul 10th, 2002 02:54 PM

I just got off the phone with the 4S in Maui and they confirmed the construction. When I asked if it could be heard from poolside, the attendant replied that it would be and they are recommending that their guests utilize the beach. As for the spa and fitness center, they will be relocated to other parts of the resort. <BR><BR>This is asinine to do this during their high season. We're booked into the Club Level at almost $800 a night for our honeymoon during October. With that in mind, and the fact that this destination is half-way around the world from us, we will be staying elsewhere.

destinfl Jul 10th, 2002 05:15 PM

Oops- did not mean to say high season. It's actually their "value" season that they are doing this in. Nonetheless, they had to have known they were doing this when we booked the reservation a couple months ago. It should have been revealed before we confirmed the reservation and they put $800 on my credit card. It's a shame I had to find out on a board on the net.<BR><BR>The hotel told me they are redoing their spa and restaurant "Ferraros". Demolition will start on September 3rd and the project has a completion date set as December 15th. They expect noise to be heard during the first few weeks of demolition.<BR><BR>Ferraros sits right next to the pool. Somehow I don't envy the idea of paying $800 bucks a night for a bunch of construction workers to ogle my wife in her bikini during our honeymoon. <BR><BR>The hotel is offering a $50 per day credit for any guest stasying between Sep. 3 and Oct. 30. The credit can be used for the room or any incidentals. <BR><BR>Most of the spa treatments will not be available, such as the mango salt glow and body masks. Basic massages will be about it and those will conducted in guest rooms that aren't being used. The weights and fitness machines will be set up in a banquet room. <BR><BR>We're looking into the Fairmont Kea Lani. You have to pay $40 a day for a pool cabana and $25 a day for a beach umbrella, but it may be worth it. Anyone with their thoughts?

amyg Jul 11th, 2002 05:30 AM

We are cancelling our res. as well. 50 dollars a day is a joke and the fact that guests will be "advised" to use the beach instead of the pool is an even bigger joke! Why pay 600 dollars a night when you can't even have the option of sitting by the pool and relaxing on your honeymoon. we are looking into the Grand Wailea, the property next door to the 4S. 4S will certainly lose lots of business due to their "wise" choice of construction time!

xxx Jul 11th, 2002 05:54 AM

It is a "wise" choice of construction time. It's their value season. It sucks that it interferes with your vacation, but when should they do it? February when the room rates are twice as high. Hotels have to renovate or people quit staying there. Fact of life.

i see Jul 11th, 2002 05:58 AM

I also understand that properties have to renovate, but it certainly is tough to find out about these renovations only 6 weeks before my departure to Maui.<BR><BR>They have hired architects and contracted with construction crews WELL in advance. I simply wish that I was given advance warning so I could have better avoided this situation in full. It's my honeymoon, and $50/day really doesn't mean squat becuase you can't put a price on "peace at the pool".<BR><BR>Sure, the world ain't gonna end, but it's a big disappointment.

disappointed Jul 11th, 2002 09:19 AM

I agree. Nothing was said to us when we made our reservations last month and they had to know well in advance. Yes, hotels have to upgrade, but it should be made abundantly clear to those making reservations under the assumption that all amenities will be available as advertised (including peaceful and quiet relaxation at the pool)<BR><BR>And as for a $50 credit- they've got to be kidding. My room is $700 a night. That's not even a 10% discount!<BR><BR>We'll be canceling our reservations as well.

xxx Jul 11th, 2002 11:27 AM

I just cancelled my reservation for my honeymoon stay at the four seasons which would have been Sept. 1-7-- during the "demolition" phase of their work. I have booked the Grand Wailea and got to take advantage of an excellent promotion: for every three nights booked, the third night is free! so basically, I am staying there for 6 nights and paying for 4! and no demolitioning to ruin my trip!

bummer Jul 12th, 2002 09:39 AM

Just talked to someone on the phone who admitted to having "jackhammers, dumptrucks, two cranes, table saws, and more equipment" during the "improvements". <BR><BR>That sounds nice about the GW promotion. I'm going to look into the Fairmont to see if I can change my reservation. I'll be canceling my reservation on the last possible day - just to give them the least amount of time to refill my room.<BR><BR>I am SO bummed out about this!

sally Jul 12th, 2002 10:22 AM

you all have such terrible, terrible problems! Where to honeymoon in Hawaii? Throw a dart at the islands and grow up.

snead Jul 12th, 2002 10:42 AM

Ritz Carlton Kapalua=all the same amenities, better beach, no jackhammers!

xxx Jul 12th, 2002 11:25 AM

Sally---<BR>take your jealousy elsewhere...<BR>to people that are honeymooners....this special time in their lives IS a big deal...so relax!

happily married Jul 12th, 2002 06:03 PM

To Sally:<BR><BR>Just because your marriage fell apart doesn't mean the same will happen to everyone else. <BR><BR>But I'm sure you'll comfort yourself by eating a gallon of Ben & Jerry's tonight while watching Leno and adding ten more pounds to that already humongous ass of yours.

Snead Jul 14th, 2002 03:06 PM

Snead! Ritz Carlton = better beach?!!!!!<BR>Who are you kidding?<BR>Ritz Carlton Beach = high surf warnings, rain and wind.

been there Jul 14th, 2002 05:14 PM

Let's get real here folks. For 700-800 a night on a honeymoon you can go to your local high dollar hotel and work out in their gym and spa and steam room. You can also wsait until the day before to cancel your reservation so that they don't rent the room out.... wow you're real people -- find ways to get even for what you don't even have.<BR><BR>If this type honeymoon is going to make for a better marriage I, for one, will be surprised!! You don't need to hock all you own (or max the credit cards) for a honeymoon!! <BR><BR>Start your life together quietly someplace private and enjoy each other - not the stupid hotel!!<BR><BR>

sss Jul 16th, 2002 11:05 AM

honestly, it's a vacation, a honeymoon, whatever, people want quality,,,,and a hotel with demolition work is not quality. I'll tell you what, you can have my room if you want. stop being so bitter!

Wouldntknow Jul 16th, 2002 11:19 AM

Yeah sss, but then they can't come here and brag about how they stayed at the Four Seasons and how their $ 700 a night hotel room was worth every penny. Not to mention that they WANT luxury, even if it means their kids have to pay for their own college.<BR><BR>What a bunch of fools! Oh, and don't forget to tell me that I'm just jealous becuse I wouldn't spend half that on a hotel room but have traveled all over the world.

another honeymooner Jul 16th, 2002 01:15 PM

I think it's great that all these folks are cancelling their rooms. It means I have a better chance of getting an upgrade to "disappointed"'s $700 room, while only paying for my mountain view. And, the $50 per day will pay my bar bill. I don't plan on spending every day I'm in Maui lounging by the pool. They won't be working on the weekends so we'll plan accordingly. And, as for needing a fabulous gym in Hawaii, ha! That's what snorkeling, hiking and mountain biking are for. I'm not going to paradise to spend my days in a smelly gym. Cheers!

get a life Jul 16th, 2002 07:25 PM

1. The construction will be going on seven days a week per the Four Seasons.<BR><BR>2. Make your kids get a job and pay for their college.<BR><BR>3. Quit worrying about how other people spend their money. Those who do so must have no money of their own to worry about. <BR>

Terry Jul 17th, 2002 08:51 AM

We just came back from our honeymoon and we stayed for 4 nights at the Kapalua Bay Resort. We got an ocean and pool view and the beach there rated the #1 beach in Hawaii two years ago. The snorkeling and surf is wonderful. We paid $350 a night and truly felt pampered. My husband played golf at the plantation course there which is supposedly rated one of the top 10 in Hawaii. At both the pool and beach you could view the islands of Molokai and Lanai....there was an ocean side masseuse...paradise.<BR><BR>That is my opinion. Kapalua was great!
