Frommers vs Fodors
 

Who makes the best travel guides: Frommers or Fodors. I personally prefere Frommers guides because they are written by locals who are more candid and personal and even have a thing in the front about why they love their city. I also prefere Frommers itineraries and reviews of attractions, restaurants and hotels which I find more interesting and reliable. Also Frommers lists the price of hotel rooms and attractions while fodors does not. Finnally the photos and little tidbits about the city and what makes it unique really get you excited about the trip. However, Fodors does have the best message boards. What do you think Fodors or Frommers?

I just can't deal with Frommer's Message Boards so it's Fodor's for me!!!

No one series is best for every destination. When traveling in the USA I use one of them with AAA TourBooks and when I travel overseas I usually also use Lonely Planet.

Frommers are my favorite guides, hands down. I have several other brands in my collection as well, but Frommers is the one that usually goes with me. I find them the most current and detailed. I'll browse through several in the bookstore, then buy Frommers. But the message board on their site is lousy ... Fodors website is the best, I think! :-)

A recent USA today interview with the new generation of Frommer's heirs/company shills was actually very interesting. The young lady said their new travel guide line is meant for a younger, hipper market who are not that into museums, "typical" tourist interests. That gets said a lot, but some of the suggestions were interesting, a la the free tango lessons at the Argentinian consulate in NYC. Not that I would do that.

While I vastly prefer Fodor's web site, I definitely like Frommer's guides better. Although I have to say that I feel Fodor's are getting better in terms of the things I look for in a guide.

As I've said many times before on this forum, I think Frommer's tends to give a better range of recommendations for restaurants and lodging. Since we tend to travel on a budget and with kids, I appreciate the recommendations on the less expensive, more casual side of things. And we've yet to ever be steered wrong on a restaurant recommendation from Frommer's.

I like Frommer's books, but their message board is boring. There is very little banter and few good laughs. I bet there's never been a Frommer's GTG in the history of the world. That's why I like Fodors board and books.

The one thing I DO like about Frommers is the lack of gremlins.

Although I have to say, P_M, their ads are even more of a pain than Fodor's. I very often accidentally open one when I'm trying to sign on. Speaking of which, having to log on is a pain!

I got a TON of use out of my Fodor's See It Paris guide.

I like the Frommer's books much better, but I like the boards on Fodor's better.

I have some of each but I really like the Michelin guides, over all.

I just purchased Fodor's "Coastal California, 3rd edition". This is an excellent book. Very well done, great maps and photos too.

I agree SAnParis. Michelin , though they are hard to follow. The Fodors and Frommer's guides are great for big cities and major attractions, but do not include the off the beaten path places. Michelin gives you the pics, population, etc and great maps. Mine from Switzerland is in pieces now, LOL.

Feel that Frommer's decriptions are better, especially restaurant and lodgings, but I say this with love..

I have a library of thirteen Frommer's books and about nine Fodor's so far..
