Dear All,

Marko, as a fellow Aussie, may I compliment you on your report. I think you have done a great job. I think it is always fascinating to live/holiday/explore other cultures and be wondrous at the sights that you see and experience. It is then terrific of you to share it with the rest of us who then get to live your trip vicariously through you.

I also lived in the States and whilst there managed to note that on occasion, as long as you answered the question "don't cha just love it here" with a "yes" then I was welcome. If I had the audacity to open my mouth and say otherwise - and perhaps to my detriment say what I didn't like - then things turned decidedly sour.

So with that in mindbr />
Please let me enlighten some of my fellow Fodorites on the ways of an Aussie.

1. Never ask an Australian for their opinion unless you are prepared to hear the truth as they see it. They will never bulls..t you, nor will they make it politically correct. It will pull no punches and be honest and forthright.
2. Typically if you don't ask, they wont give it, however as this is a forum and by its very nature, open to everyones discussion, be prepared that Australian's will enter said forum and not always say what you want to hear.
3. Aussies will take it with good grace if you give it back, on the proviso that it is not mean spirited, petty, whiny, or down right pathetic as are some comments in this thread.
4. The concept of a "spade is a spade" holds true in Australia and we basically call it like it is. This is by no means meant as rudeness - just a little too blunt sometimes.

I have now lived out of Australia for over eight years, and my views over that time have changed dramatically. I now see things that I would never have noted before, but most importantly for this forum, I find it fascinating to talk to people about what they DISLIKED about Australia when they come back from a holiday. I already know the good bits. Enlighten me about my country, - show me a different side that maybe I hadn't considered - don't just patronize me by only telling me it was great and leaving out the parts that you didn't like - surely that is not indicative of your holiday????? I defy anyone to say that they don't notice things that they dislike as well as enjoy in other countries.

So Marko, my hubby and I would buy you a beer any day, if nothing else but for the flack you've copped in here.!!.

As we say in Aus, go hard or go home.
