From LA to NYC in 8 days

We are renting an RV for a coast to coast trip but we have only 8 days. We are taking the 80 and the 90 visiting Yellowstone, Jewel cave,Mount Rushmore, Chicago, Niagara Falls, Boston. Any suggestions on places to see on the way from M.Rushmore to Chicago?Thank you, Barbara

Sounds unreasonable to me.

I really don't think that is doable in that time frame - esp with such a behemoth.

Of course, you can get to all of those places - but you really won't have time to see much of anything.

Also, depending on when you are going, places to park it may already be full. (Yellowstone often is fully reserved a year in advance.) And for Chicago and Boston you will have to park outside and find public transit in and out of the city.

And for Niagara Falls you really want to see it from the Canadian side - and I very much doubt you can take the RV into Canada.

I suggest that if you do plan to make such a trip that you do it without the RV. I think between the rental and the gas it would cost little, if any, more to have the comfort and flexibility of staying in motels. Not to mention speed if you get behind in your schedule.

Has someone in your party volunteered to drive all night while the rest of you sleep?

bpolloni May 15th, 2013 01:36 PM

Thank you so much for your replies. We are 2 drivers and we are planning to drive about 8-10 hours/day. We are not going to visit NYC, done that in the past, but we have a flight from JFK on June 16 at late night that will take the whole family to Italy. We need the RV because we are traveling with 2 kids and 2 dogs :) This is our Farewell US trip after living here for the last 16 years. Most probably we will drive a great amounts of miles non stop after visiting M.Rushmore on the way to Chicago to reserve more time for rest of the sites.
Please keep give suggestions, thx.

So where are you leaving the RV when you're done driving across country?

bpolloni May 15th, 2013 03:03 PM

Our friend for NYC will drive the RV back to LA.

This is not reasonable nor sensible. You want to basically drive round the clock in an RV. Rent an SUV one way and cut the number of destinations . . .

clarkgriswold May 15th, 2013 04:28 PM

So basically you are planning on driving in the RV from 5am to 10am every day, finding something interesting to do between 10am and 4pm if you just happen to be situated near an attraction at that time, and then continuing driving east from 4pm to 10pm daily?

What you'll need to do is take a map and figure out just where you'll be during those times every day. You can't really plan around going from this attraction to that attraction because you are pressed for time and must keep moving eastward at a steady pace.

In other words, you won't have the luxury of seeing certain things because they are not ten hours apart. And you can't see both Jewel Cave and Mt. Rushmore because they are both 10 hours from Yellowstone, you'd have to pick one and then continue to move eastward.

I wouldn't want to be driving and parking an RV around Chicago and Boston.
