From Grenada to Maui

Hi everyone-

We were expecting to spend our honeymoon in Grenada. Unfortunately, that is not possible anymore so we are quickly switching to Maui. I'm trying to read through the posts but I was wondering if I could just throw myself on the mercy of my fellow travellers and ask - what hotel/condo/inn/cabin would you recommend that would be romantic, fairly well-priced, and available at this late date? We don't need an ocean view but we would like to be near the beach/water and away from the bustle. We'd picked Grenada because it was so uncommercial.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

NewOrbners.

Suggest that you define "well-priced", (e.g. under $300 or over $300/night)$)

Also when is "this late date?" I mean, when do you plan to travel?

Do you have your hearts set on Maui? We found Maui to be very "bustling" with people. You may prefer Kauai to get away from the hustle and bustle.

Thanks for the responses:

Ah - here's the details of our honeymoon We were planning of traveling the first two weeks of October. We were planning on spending no more than $220 a night because we really don't plan on hanging out there much - we were planning a lot of hiking, snorkeling, etc. I was just in Kauai a couple of years ago and want to see parts of the island I haven't seen. We were also looking at the Big Island and Moloki.

Thanks - Jim

I assume you'd prefer a hotel over a condo and there seem to be many condo's available in that range and we enjoyed one at the end of last October in Wailea at Grand Champions.

For a hotel on Maui, based on your $)criteria suggest considering the Maui Prince in Wailea, though haven't stayed there personally.

Sheraton Maui at www.spg.com may also be close to your $)range but Kaanapali beach is busier than Wailea. Beachgirl86 recently honeymooned on Maui at Hyatt and got lower rates using www.hotwire.com.

On the Big Island, we have stayed at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott (has a beach) for similar rates to what you're proposing, and I have seen similar rates for the nearby Hilton Waikoloa (has a lagoon).
:S-
Congratulations on your Honeymoon!

As indicated on another thread, and available on www.expedia.com Hapuna Beach Prince on the Big Island, also worth considering. :S-

I'll second the suggestion of Grand Champions Villas at Wailea. Try VRBO.com It's a great place...quiet, well maintained , uncrowded!!

JohnD: Wow, what a great memory you have for remembering my Hyatt Hotwire rate :) I am hoping to get back to Hawaii sometime in the next year, but will only revisit the Hyatt (which we loved) if we could get a similar rate. I just can't see paying almost $400/night when I got it for $209 on Hotwire! Any Hawaii trips in the future for you?

Neworbners: I LOVED the Hawaiian islands we went to (Oahu, Maui, and Big Island) and they were all wonderful for different reasons.

For you, if you are interested in uncommercial, I would recommend the Big Island. It is such an amazing place, so much raw natural beauty. We stayed at the Waikoloa Marriott and the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, wach for about $200/night. Both were great, but I would absolutely give the edge to Hapuna for nicer rooms, more romantic, quiet, and tranquil. It's on a gorgeous beach with great snorkeling and it's definitely "away from the bustle" of things. Good luck!

I don't know if it's available, but we're renting this Grand Champions Villa in Wailea in Nov.

We stayed at the Hapuna Prince last year and loved it, try their web site for specials. I think we paid $189.

Reply to Beachgirl86, Yes, amazingly low fares from east coast to HNL have prompted us to consider another HI visit, in fact for example, a 2 hour flight to Bermuda is the same 8}price as ~10 hour flight to HNL.

Additionally appreciate your sharing of the hotwire experience as I don't recall anyone here using it for HI, I assume you reserved the ((*))((*))((*))((*))((*))correct?:? Just curious, because on Maui we probably wouldn't stay in Kaanapali, though any info. on experiences with these cryptic websites (i.e. hotel name not stated when pricing) is a great benefit to fellow fodorites! =D>

beachgirl86 Sep 11th, 2004 09:01 AM

JohnD: I agree with you about the East Coast fares! I was looking at prices for next summer (we fly out of Boston), and although I know it's early, there were much better fares to HNL than to some islands in the Caribbean.

Yep, we used the 5-star request on Hotwire, and I was 99% positive that it was going to be the Hyatt, which was where I wanted to stay. They do offer resorts in Wailea as well. Oftentimes on Hotwire, you can figure out the resort (even though it's not named) by also checking out the "Vacation Packages" section (where the hotels ARE named) and plugging in the same dates. It's pretty easy to compare and guess which hotel is which.

We had a great experience there, the only thing we didn't get was an upgrade (got them at the other 3 hotels), but I had figured that beforehand. It was still definitely worth it!

Was just reviewing this thread and wanted to suggest you try biddingfortravel.com for help using Priceline to get a hotel. There are also hotel reviews available for you. This is low season and you should find some great deals.

Hi everyone -

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried going through the Internet but really didn't have the time to compare all the options. So I used the phone. I ended up with nine nights at the Plantation Inn and 2 nights at the Heavenly Hama Inn for about 200 an night. Figured that was pretty good - I'm sure I could have saved money elsewhere but could have also not had anything as well. As it is, I'm in the hotels that I wanted to go to within my budget.

I was able to rebook the flight and got on probably the last low fair to Hawaii (since everyone who is in the same boat is going there as well). American agents nicest I ever dealt with. So pretty happy. Lahania is going to be busier that we wanted but at the same time it is convenient to all parts of the island so that's a good thing. And we aren't going to the Big Island which is lucky since it looks like Manua Lao is going to erupt. One natural disaster a year for me, thank you very much!

Thanks for all your help-

Jim
