From Fodors.com: Dr. Seuss and server trouble
Hello All --

Just a quick note to apologize for our server troubles this week. Some posters feared wed become the victim of hackers and others thought we were sadists out to torture our Travel Talk addicts. Wrong on both counts. The grinch who stole the forums, albeit unintentionally, was actually the late Dr. Seuss.

Each year around the time of the good doctors birthday, March 1, kids from schools across the nation access the Web site of our parent company, Random House, as part of the celebration. Each year, we and the Random House techies put in place measures to keep the rest of our Web activity proceeding apace, but this year the onslaught was greater than expected, which led to interruptions in service.

Were terribly sorry for any inconvenience our server problems may have caused. The flurry of traffic should have abated by Monday (March 4). In the meantime, were all eating green eggs and ham as penance.

Thanks to everyone - regulars and newbies - for making the forums as robust as ever.

Yours truly,

Danny Mangin
Editorial Director

Maybe you should be eating one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.

Fodors should delete this thread immediately! Not only does this have absolutely nothing to do with travel, but it's obvious this Danny whats-his-name is a troll!!

(Just kidding.)

Hey Danny:
Are you and your staff now required to wear tall hats with stripes on them?
"Also can you recommned a restaurant in Times Square that serves green eggs and ham? It has to be funky and hip and definitely not too expensive. Can I get there by subway or should I take a cab?" ;)
Thanks for all your hard work. I missed you guys terribly!
|
Thanks Danny!

I missed Fodors while you were gone and didn't realize how much time I spent here. Keep up the good work!
|
Hi, Danny -- Glad to have you back!

Can someone remind us all next Feb. 28th to stand ready for trouble?

Danny, I thought for sure somebody would have added this already. Anyway, here's Dr. Seuss's explanation of the problem:

DR. SEUSS EXPLAINS WHY COMPUTERS SOMETIMES CRASH

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket
on a port,
and the bus is interrupted at a very
last resort,

and the access of the memory makes your
floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an
error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item
followed by a dash
and the double-clicking icon puts your
window in the trash;

and your data is corrupted cause the
index doesn't hash,
then your situation's hopeless and your
system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table
at your house
says the network is connected to the
button on your mouse,

but your packets want to tunnel to
another protocol,
that's repeatedly rejected by the
printer down the hall,

and your screen is all distorted by the
side effects of gauss,
so your icons in the window are as wavy
as a souse;

then you may as well reboot and go out
with a bang,
'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's
gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy's getting
sloppy in the disk
and the macrocode instructions cause
unnecessary risk,

then you'll have to flash the memory
and you'll want to RAM your ROM.
Quickly turn off the computer and be
sure to tell your Mom!

Danny - thank you for the kind explanation. Like others responding here, I too don't realize how addicted I am to this forum until it's not available. Have tried many travel forums, and yours is the most user-friendly of them all. Thanks also to "Computer Problem" for the poetry - hilariously wonderful to us Dr. Seuss fans.....
