Friendship, Maine

using Friendship as a base, what sights are nearby ? how far is Acadia National Park ? are there beaches nearby and if we wanted to watch a sunrise or a sunset - where would be the best place to go ? thank you

I had to google it, looks like it is on the coast, and 102 miles/2.5 hours from Acadia.

It's a quiet coastal down on a peninsula not far from Camden/Rockland/Damariscotta. Definitely more of a rocky-coast/ lobster boat kind of area than beach.

For "beach", you'd probably have to drive 90 minutes to Popham State Park or Reid State Park. There is good lake swimming not far from Friendship, and lots of "pebble beach".

Sunrise over Friendship harbor is lovely:

What clarkgriswold says.

There is "nothing" to do there. This may sound wonderful to you, or it may sound like hell: read, play board games, walk to "town", eat lobster, take the boat to Monhegan for the day, where there is also "nothing" to do.

It is way too cold to swim, even if there were beaches, which there are not, really.

You can go to the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland to see the Wyeths and get directions to th Olson house. There is other stuff in and near Rockland, but it is by no means just over the hill.

thanks all for your replies... we happened to rent this house for a week from a friend of a friend.. and its a girls week so nothing sounds really good... I know we will drive to Acadia for a day...as long as we have alcohol, books, dvds, we will be okay... And now I have ideas for some outings... thanks again :)

Be sure to get up to Thomaston Grocery for one of Amy's Pies. Reserve it, they go fast. Raspberry, Blueberry, Strawberry Rhubarb...they're all terrific. Lunch and an afternoon stroll in Camden would be fun, too...or dinner and then sunset from Camden Harbor

It's a long day to go to Acadia, but if that's what you want . . . .

If you go to Camden, consider a windjammer cruise. On a nice day, they are really relaxing, and you can bring lunch and a bottle or two of wine.

There are at least two wineries you can visit. Cellar Door in Lincolnville and the one in Rockland (can't remember the name). There's at least one or two more wineries but those two are my favorites.
