My two rules of travel:

1. Hotels should have names, not numbers (Roman Numerals excluded).

2. There are 2 kinds of restaurant in the world--the kind where you look down to read the menu and the kind where you look up. You can look up for a lunch menu, but never dinner. :-)

My lifelong motto, instilled by my amazing mom:

Go wherever you can, whenever you can.

You can make more money; you can't make more time.

sceneisle May 19th, 2006 12:18 PM

The rewards of the journey far outweigh the risk of leaving the harbor.

i've posted this before...
explore, and explore. make yourself neccessary and the world will give you bread.
i definitely use this for all aspects of my life. for me, it's just about reaching out, extending yourself, making sure you show up for the life that is meant for you.

There is another way to go through life besides being drug through it kicking and screaming.

If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade... or better yet, limoncello!!

Statia May 19th, 2006 03:26 PM

I don't live to travel. I travel to live. :)

LoveItaly May 19th, 2006 03:29 PM

My favorite, only take half of what you think you will need and budget twice as much as you think you will spend.

BuffaloGirl May 19th, 2006 03:34 PM

I'll spend all day in the great outdoors......as long as I can spend all night in the great indoors!

I made that up a long time ago after an awful night sleeping in a tent. It will never happen again.

Sleep with the windows open and soak in some of the culture!!!

Bring a journal or notebook and take notes of your wonderful experiences, names of towns you pass, restauarants, people you meet.

:)

"Travel light - preconception and prejudice are unnecessary luggage"

Little_Man May 19th, 2006 04:46 PM

you can't take it with you -- don't cheap out on vacation, especially if you're like us and can't get away for very long on vacation. Or/ you get what you pay for!

ElleD9 May 19th, 2006 05:04 PM

Old faithful - "don't be a tourist, be a traveller"

Also, wish I didn't just use the phrase "on island time" - hope to one day actually live it!

Melissa May 19th, 2006 07:04 PM

My husband's : "Go big or stay home"
It's no fun scrimping and counting pennies while on vacation.

Mine: "Only sugar melts in the rain", as it rains almost every vacation that we ever go on...including places where its rarely does. Hey, you can't fight mother nature.

trippinkpj May 19th, 2006 07:39 PM

Travel light, but be prepared. It's a balancing act between the two. Also, be flexible and adaptable to change things up if necessary. Luggage on wheels are your travel "buddies". :-)

A ship in the harbour is safe, but that is not what ships were built for.

Ah, BuffaloGirl, my sentiments exactly! I always say I can spend the whole day outside very happily, but at night I need a bed and a bathroom!

So many of my friends/neighbors spend so much time and $$ worrying about their house, their new kitchen, what needs to be re-done next. I feel like my priorities are always to get AWAY from my house.

phieaglefan May 20th, 2006 05:48 AM

A bad day traveling is still better than a good day at work!

Karens- I concur completely about the house thing. People ask me how we can travel so often. I tell them that I simply make it my top priority. Then it's easy!

Great post Faina!

Wow it's just like home, only better!

girlonthego May 20th, 2006 06:35 AM

I love to be in a place where I don't have to cook or clean!

Different cultures teach you more than you will ever learn in a classroom.

If you change your plans two days before your trip, don't tell your husband how much it cost till he enjoys the vacation (just did this :)!) He loved the vacation so much he said it was all worth it!

Don't let the dust settle around your feet.

I love all of your comments! :)

tovarich May 20th, 2006 07:00 AM

There's no place like home.
