frequent flyer points

As I will be using FF points to fly internally in the USA in May and July should I book now or is it better to wait or are more seats/flights produced nearer the time? The flights need to tie in with an already booked return flights to and from LAX from Australia. We would be flying with AA.
Thanks.

Are there seats available for FF points now, and if so, what would be the point of waiting?

Hello northie

Since your dates are set, I would suggest you reserve those other flights as soon as you can.

May, June, and July are busy and FF seats book up fast.

However, there are often pretty good sales at times, depending on where you'll be going. If it's just a short hop from LA, maybe you'd rather wait for a sale and purchase a ticket. (Anywhere in the contiguous 48 states will cost you 25,000 miles: from LA to Las Vegas or New York or anywhere in between.)

Happy travels!

Frequent flyer seats book FAST. If they are available, get them now. I don't know about AA, but with NWA if you decide not to use the tickets you can pay something like $50 a ticket and have the miles dumped back into your account.

thanks for the replies. We are using Qantas points for AA so I know it's 36,000 for the internal return ticket.

You really want to run the risk of waiting - especially in a month like July where everyone else is trying to use their points?

What's more important to you, certainty or whatever it is that is causing you to consider waiting?

I'm thinking it's now $150 to cancel an award ticket and put the miles back in your account -- no?

I agree that it depends on where you're going. One thing with AA mileage tickets is you can also do a stopover or multi destination or open jaw. Just for example, you could do Los Angeles to Boston, then Boston to New York, and then travel on your own to Miami, and fly from Miami back to LA all on one award ticket.

I've already booked our "Business Class" which really means First Class tickets for May/June using AA mileage. I did it partly to get them before the mileage requirements went up (too late for that now), and partly to be sure I could get the flights I wanted.

Congrats Northie! It feels so good when the giant pieces of the puzzle are all booked, doesn't it?

Patrick - So sad. I should have known that that was a fee they hadn't thought to raise yet, but now they have. I really, really wish Southwest flew more out of Detroit, but with two little kids the layovers are impossible.
