Bianca, of course, is in NYC. And the answer is: for seafood, Le B., without a doubt. For a fun lunch, J-G (front room .. La Nougataine); and for the best of the best, Daniel ... I hope you have a reservation ... better hurry. Danile is where you want to dine. Lesp. lost its great chef, but has a new one ... time will tell.

L, believe it or not the entire world is not familiar with New York. I, for one, wasn't sure which city either!

Sorry, Sarah, it's just that Bianca listed some of the most famous to anyone interested in food. I do agree though ... "NYC" in the title would have clarified for all. I am going to take greater care in my own titles .. thx. for the timely reminder. Ciao

I have been to Jean George and Daniel - more recently Daniel for my 40th birthday.

You can't go wrong with either one of them.

Bianca, I'd like to add a few more thoughts to go with the other suggestions. If you book at Jean Georges, be sure to ask for the rear formal room, not the front room (aka Nougatine) ... I am assuimg you are interested in formal french dining. If you book at Daniel Boulud's place, be sure to do it soon ... so popular, and I believe it may now be in new quarters. Another restaurant to consider would be Chanterelle, but when I attempted to reserve with them they had a private party going for lunch that Saturday. I wasn't that pleased with the way they treated me on the phone ... they refused to accept my booking until a certain date, and when I called on that date, they said "not available." If you are interested in a french bistro, Montrachet would be just fine. By the way, if you look at Zagat's for NYC, you will see that some of the best offer great orix fixe menus ... for a real money saver. If you wish to have a terrific lunch sometime, check out Zoe. Great wines by the glass too. Enjoy NYC.

Bianca, you can preview menus, wine lists, and decor at Daniel and Jean-Georges on their web sites: www.danielnyc.com and www.jean-georges.com. Some people like the modernist look of Jean Georges; others find it cold. Everyone seems to like the food!

And for future reference, there's no New York forum. Anything you post here goes into the one US forum, so it always helps to include a city name and descriptive title (like "NYC French restaurants"). The scrolling list where you click on a state name just narrows down the posts for search purposes, but does not affect posting at all.

I have not eaten at Daniel's new place on the East Side, but I've it and it's plush. One reviewer said he thought it a bit crowded, but I didn't think so. It is easily number one in NYC for french food. My sister who has lived in NYC for 30+ years used to rave about his old place years ago; he has been at the top for a very long time. The wine list will be extensive, expensive, and you can probably check the Wine Spectator Magazine site and get their rating on Danile's list ... I would think it will be very high indeed. I cannot imagine you will pay under $75-$100 per bottle ... but as I am sure you know, these restaurants often have their own bottlings and deals for less money. As far as prices are concerned: Daniel does not offer a prix fixe, but Zagat's says you may eat in their bar with an a la carte menu and save some money. The Zagat's 2000 NYC book listed Daniel's cost at $75 PP for dinner, one drink and a tip. If I were estimating, I'd say $100 per person, at least, plus wine, at the very least, plus more tip. NYC never disappoints me when I get the bill ... I always know it will be higher than I'd expected. If I had to guess, I'd say $600, easily, but perhaps you'll be pleasantly surprised. It is going to be expensive ... I have no idea how much. I would think if you're near NYC, or have a friend who is, you can always drop by in advance and look at the menu ... unless he changes it daily, which in all likelihood he does do. But the wine list will be there to see, and often that is a good time to talk to them and get advice about wines for the evening meal. Good luck, and after you are at Daniel, post a report so we can be envious.

Bianca, as Caitlin suggested, I looked at Daniel's website. Although he does list a dinner seasonal menu, he says it is subject to change. Prices are not listed for main courses but $15-$25 for a few appetizers. He does offer three tasting menus (he calls it prix fixe)... $78 for three, $105 for five, I forget the third. He also shows his Bar and Lounge menu, with prices: average cost for appetizer and main would be $50-$55 or higher. None of this includes tax and tip, so figure an additional 25% minimum. Drinks and wine, extra, dessert extra. So his prix fixe seem a good way to go ... the five course at $105 probably reasonable. After drinks and wine, tip and tax (25% combined for easier math), my $600 estimate would need to be raised to close to $700. That's one drink and one bottle of wine (I usually don't have that much self discipline). So, I hope this helps a little bit ...that's all I can do on this issue. Good luck, and you will need to call Danile ASAP, or so my intuition strongly advises me. Enjoy Daniel and your special occasion!!!

You might also consider Alain Ducasse at the Essex House if it is truly a special occasion. In Paris the experience was truly incredible.
