French Quarter hotel
 

Four of us, 2 rooms, are going to New Orleans, 3/26-3/30 2011. Does anyone know if there are any low end priced hotels right in the French Quarter? And since I want it 'all' (heehee) would love a room with a balcony. Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated in advance. Thank you!

These 3 hotels are well located in the FQ within a few blocks of Galatoire's, Mr. B's, Bayona, French Market, Jackson Square, etc. Le Marais was recently remodeled. Provincial has balcony's.

Best Western is a inexpensive FQ hotel. I don't like the location on Rampart. If you stay there take a cab at night. Walking in daytime is fine.

With all due respect to Littleman, I would not stay on Rampart. It's the absolute edge of the French Quarter and across the street can be dangerous.

We stayed at the Place d'Armes last time we were in New Orleans and it was great. The hotel is in a great location, just a half block from Jackson Square and a block and a half from Bourbon street, but it is on a quiet side street. The hotel is made up of several townhouses around a pretty courtyard with lots of plants. There is a small pool in the courtyard. There is a complimentary breakfast is served every morning. The breakfast isn't fancy, but it will get you started.

We reserved a courtyard room and were upgraded to a balcony room for the same rate. It was great. There are some interior rooms, which don't have windows, so beware of that. Those room have lower rates though, so if you really need to watch your budget and don't mind a dark room, that might be a good option for you.

I agree with Susan...I would recommend something closer to the river. Rampart is kind of a dividing line between fairly safe and unsafe. You need to be aware of your surroundings in the FQ, just like any big city. I haven't been to NOLA since April the year of Katrina, but I've heard the crime is a little worse. With that said...I'll be going to Mardi Gras this year, so I certainly have no qualms about visiting.

I stayed at Hotel Provincial probably 25-30 yrs ago, but we were very impressed. It's a little further back in the quarter from Canal Street, so it's not as noisy.

We never stayed at Le Richelieu, but several friends and family members have and they really enjoyed their stay. It too is a little further back in the quarter.

My parents stayed many years ago at Place d'Armes while Hubby and I stayed at a different hotel. They got one of the inside rooms and I would not stay in one of those rooms.

On one of my more recent visits we stayed at Dauphine Orleans, and we absolutely loved it. There is a ghost in the bar...which used to be a brothel, and it's just a really nice hotel. I would love to stay there again, but on our visit in March we'll be staying on the other side on Canal St.

Haven't been in a long time, and sometimes they don't allow Saturday arrivals, but...

Have stayed many times at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel and loved it. It is not perfect, but I always found it comfortable and elegant (not in a too fancy way though). You could not have a better location, right on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, at the corner of Bourbon and Orleans. They have balconies on Bourbon Street, although I always request a quiet room. I always felt the price was very fair for the quality.

There is actually a better Best Western right across Canal from the Quarter. I would not advise staying on Rampart. http://stchristopherhotel.com/
