Free Delta Tickets-where to go?

We have won two free ($500 each) tickets on Delta. We have been to most of the usual US attractions, national parks and big cities. Any suggestions for an out-of-the-way, off the beaten track, trip? Must travel by end of May, 2012 coming from Richmond, VA.

Seattle, take the ferry and visit the San Juan Islands of Washington.

so amazing that you suggested that! we were just looking at that option. any more detailed thoughts on that area--time to spend, where to stay, time of year to go, etc. ? we love that area--have been to Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, North Cascades, but not the islands. Thanks in advance!

I fell in love with the San Juans when I first visited. There are several islands with lodging options. You might want to flesh out the details on what you would want, secluded or in town?, luxury or casual?, budget limitations, and what kind of activities you enjoy. There is a wonderful blend of scenic beauty, outdoor activities and history on the islands.

virginiafish May 24th, 2011 11:17 AM

We would be interested in casual, in town. We enjoyed walking/hiking, biking, museums and cultural events.

TTT any other suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Fordor lost half of my post and I can't remove it. Lets try again...

Mackinac Island is in the Straits of Mackinac in northern Michigan. Delta flies into the Emmet County airport 15 miles away, or you can go into a larger airport down state.

Although now a state park, the Island was originally America's 2nd National Park. The Island is beautiful and 85% of the Island is undeveloped. The small community includes Fort Mackinac which was built during the American Revolution & contested during the War of 1812, the summer residence of the Michigan Governor, many small shops, restaurants & museums, perhaps 20 fudge shops, other smaller hotels and the world famous Grand Hotel where the movie Somewhere in Time was filmed.

No automobiles are permitted on the Island. You get around by food, bicycle, horse & carriage or horseback.

Portland, OR is wonderful. Great town, and very close to mountains and coast.
