Fredericksburg VA

I have to book a group of rooms for a girls' high school sports team that is traveling to Fredericksburg for a competition. I have already checked TripAdvisor but wanted to get ideas from my Fodorite friends that travel in the area. The Sleep Inn is not available. I can get a block at the Comfort Inn and the Fairfield. I'm going to next invetstigate the Best Western. Any thoughts?

Avoid the Holiday Inn, but it looks like you've already done that.

Often Best Westerns and Fairfields don't include breakfast so if that's the case I'd go for Comfort Inn. With a group of girls you want them to be able to go down and get some breakfast, not have to wait to bus to a restaurant.

Thank you. Yes, I noticed that the Holiday Inn did not get a high ranking. I also noticed that the Hampton Inn had room doors opening to the outside which seems unusual for that chain. Its funny what you look for when traveling with a group of teens rather than your family. I was looking for a good free breakfast but then found out that this group likes to go to IHOP or something because they are competing for 2 days and like to load up.

If they win and you want to celebrate (or they lose and you want to drown their sorrows) head to Carl's for some fantastic frozen custard. It's a Fredricksburg tradition. I hope they win!

We stay at Comfort Inn (I think I have a review posted on TripAdvisor) twice a year driving to/from Savannah to drop off/pick up son. I think it might well suit your purposes.

I have always found it to be economical, clean, staff is attentive and pleasant. Rooms are quiet - even one on first floor we had this September. There are connecting rooms - girls might like that. A few stores within walking distance, but not enough places to go that you would have to worry about chasing them around town all night. Bonus on traveling with a group of HS kids - breakfast is included and it is a somewhat above-average hotel breakfast with waffle machines, fresh fruit, yogurt, etc. Soda machines are always working and stocked.

Unfortunately for chaperones, no restaurant or bar in hotel.

Gail: I did see your reviews and found them to be very helpful. Thank you.
I have told them about Carl's and hope it works as an incentive. They have to win to get to Fredericksburg.
I just found out that it is the same weekend as the Marine Corp Museum opening in Manassas. Whooppee!! Teenage girls and a town filled with Marines!

Considering the teenage girls and Marines in town, was wondering if there was any group of cloistered nuns who would lock in the girls for the weekend.

Birdie Oct 24th, 2006 06:46 PM

LOL. They are actually girls from a Catholic high school. They know all the anti-nun tricks.

Birdie--Noticed your post, because we just got back from Fredericksburg last night! (Went to a dear friend's wedding.)

We stayed at a new Marriott property called TownePlace Suites, on Market Street, very convenient to I-95 and Hwy 1.

This sounds like it's slightly higher than what you're interested in, but it might fit. We paid $89/night for a room w/ 1 queen-sized bed, and a full kitchen--they also have some suites w/ 2 queen-sized beds, a sofa bed, and a full kitchen.

Food preparation in the rooms might reduce your costs a good deal, and this place also has a breakfast buffet w/ pancakes, waffles, yoghurt, and eggs. (Not comparable in volume to IHOP, and not as good, either, but it's free!)

Anyway, the hotel was clean, comfortable, and pretty nice (with interior hallways). Just a thought.
Good luck with the trip!

Birdie - very funny that they are from Catholic school - hope you were not offended by my post. You obviously are knowledgeable about teenage girls if you are concerned about the outside entrance thing. Of course, I am sure they will be perfect angels. At least you do not have the same worry about room damage that you do with teenage boys (I was involved in booking rooms for soccer tournament - HS boys - some years ago. I am still recovering.

We're here at the Comfort Inn and its fantastic. Everyone has been very helpful even with last minute changes. Our game was late and we weren't staying if we lost so I was on the phone at 5:50 with the hotel keeping them posted. They couldn't have been nicer.

The rooms are clean and comfortable. There is a nice indoor pool and outdoor patio (breakfast was lovely out there this am). Dinner at El Charro across the street was fine. There are several restaurants within walking distance.

Now on to finals. Maybe we'll get to Carl's afterwards. No Marines spotted yet!

Made me smile. :-D

It is so nice that you took time to reply - it is always better to feel our comments do not go into some black hole somewhere. Glad you liked Comfort Inn. Did they win?

Birdie Nov 12th, 2006 05:49 AM

They won!! State champs.
It was late before everything was done so there wasn't any time for Carl's on this trip. So it is a good excuse for a return trip to Fredericksburg. A couple of the moms went into the older section of town and said it is worth another visit. Thanks again to everyone.
