Frederick, MD, with dog and teen daughter

Hi, all,

My husband, 16 year old daughter and dog will be spending 6 days in Frederick in April. We hope to enjoy both the history (including Gettysburg and Harper's Ferry) and natural beauty of the area.

Any tips on places to visit that allow dogs? Any suggestions for places that might entice a 16 year old away from her electronics?

Thanks!

CK

Dogs are easier than teenage girls!

We made a short visit to Frederick in September 2015 because I wanted to see the Community Bridge.

In addition to strolling the walkway, the downtown area has several trompe l'oeil paintings on building exteriors. When we were approaching one, the four of us had an argument over whether the open window was really a window or a painting. It was that real. Your teenager will have to pay attention to see these. Sometimes it's a small painting hidden among other things. I dare her not to be fascinated. She should read the web page because I think the Community Bridge helped revitalize the community. Before we visited I also found a page that showed what that area looked like before the bridge and then afterward.

For the dog- hiking in Cunningham Falls state Park. There are a variety of hikes and it's a short drive from Frederick.

For the daughter (ok, and the rest of you :)- downtown Frederick is lovely. I enjoy the tapas at Isabella's (and I dream about the cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped figs!) and wandering through the shops. My favorites are Curious Iguana for books, Dancing Bear for kids' toys, Voila for tea, and The Trail House for outdoor gear.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks, all, for the great tips.

We'll definitely check out Cunningham Falls State Park. And the shopping/eating in downtown Frederick sounds like fun.

DebitNM, I think you're right that dogs can be easier than teenage girls -- certainly the dog doesn't get bored as easily! :)
