Rave: the Patriots. At last, professional athletes that kids and their parents can look up to.

Rave: for all the hits that our health care system takes, there has been amazing progress made in cancer and other treatments.

No rants, mostly because of the above.

tinathetoad Feb 4th, 2005 09:37 AM

rave: we are going away for one night without my 6 month old son.

rant: my mother-in-law may have breast cancer

rave: the weather is glorious

rant: I am still trying to loose my pregnancy weight (drat to those 10 lbs.)

rave: worked out this morning at Curves and feel great!!

April Feb 4th, 2005 09:53 AM

Okay I can take your extra 3 pounds travelinwifey and a couple from ncgrrl, but only if that's ok with ncgrrl who had first dibs.

Rant: #%&*! stores' phone systems. Letting your fingers do the walking is not so easy. "We're very busy" has worn thin.

Jocelyn_P Feb 4th, 2005 10:03 AM

Rant: family, friends, and cyber-friends who are dealing with illness, death, and troubled personal relationships.

Rave: I leave for Paris on Tuesday ;;)

ronkala Feb 4th, 2005 10:08 AM

Rant:
did my income tax this week. have to
pay because of amount taken out of IRA for the three week trip west.

Bigger rant. Compared 2004 tax table with 2003 to see what the difference would be IF the taxable income had been the same. Taxes would have been a whopping three dollars less. Thankyou
George for cutting my taxes.

travelinwifey Feb 4th, 2005 10:09 AM

Okay April, I'm willing to wait. But in the meantime I guess I'll have to diet:D No more ((^))((^))

Rave: Lots of travelers going to great places this week. Have fun!:p

ncgrrl Feb 4th, 2005 10:11 AM

Hmm, 3 pounds won't make much of a difference for me, so travelwifey can give her 3 pounds to April and get the rest from me. If anyone else needs some weight, I'm more than happy to share.

Atilla, unfortunately, I started out with "oh, that sounds great" but as the plans grew and mushroomed, I wanted to back out but can't. Well, I didn't get a flu shot this year, so maybe I'll be under the weather. I'd rather not kill off a relative as I like most of them.

wanderluster Feb 4th, 2005 10:15 AM

Rant: A less political thread today!

Rave: Too many people suffering from diseases and afflictions but --

Rave: Finally someone will do something about Social Security.

Yeah, piggy people have been trying to repeal it for 70 years. Finally somebody has the nerve to try.

tpatricco Feb 4th, 2005 10:35 AM

Happy Friday Everyone!

Rave: Work is getting busy & I've got three fun projects (in addition to the regular ones)...even got to go to Liberty Island for an office furniture design call today!

Rave: Warm weather for the NYC area this weekend in the 40's! :)

Rant: My VW Passat decided it should have it's own in-car swimming pool. There's a leak somewhere and water is sloshing back and forth when I drive! This is in addition to it's existing suspenision problem that the dealer wanted $700+ to fix! We've decided to fix it ourselves & sell it & get me a Volvo! (Our true passion other than travel).

Rave: My efforts to improve communictaion and participation in the Garden State Chapter of The Volvo Club of America have received much positive feedback & we're looking forward to lots of events this year!

Rave: William Trevor wants to come to our Fodor's GTG in May! And he's bringing PINS!!! Woo-hoo!!

Rave: Wedding date has been moved forward six months! Da kids are off to Portland and the Oregon Coast for a week, they can't wait! ((r))

Rave: DD got a 2001 Volkswagon Bettle last night, she loves it! It's a cool periwinkle color, called Vortex, that they apparently only made 2,000 of that year. :D

Rave: DD enrolled in driver's ed, she will be able to get her license a bit before she's 17. ( I think 16 is too young to drive, IMO.)) :D

Rave: Beautiful sunny day, we're going to have a picnic for lunch out on the front lawn. :D Cheesesteak sandwiches, pink lemonade and Oil and Vinegar potato chips. Homemade chocolate, chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Yum! :D

Rave: Future DIL got off jury duty, she was a potential juror for a mass murder case. Very scarey! :(

Rave: Snowboarding on Monday! It should be gorgeous! Happy Weekend, Happy Travels! ***kim*** ((#))

mikemo Feb 4th, 2005 12:09 PM

Buenas tardes,

Rave: Scott Burn's article re: SSC and Medicare in today's DMN: www.dallasnews.com President Bush's stealth tax It's the most clear, complete, nonpartisan and concise review I have seen.

Rant: Scott didn't "crucify" our elected officials for ignoring Medicare/Medicaid.

Rave: We 55+ yo folks vote and shall remain "protected".

Rave/Rant: Our children and grandchildren will face lots of options and the best choices, as always, will be rewarded.

Rant: 40% of adults in the US cannot balance a check book. How will they cope?

Rant: All of our elected officials will have a way better retirement.

Rave: Force all government employees at all levels into the "system" and the financial problems of SSC disappear "forever".

Rave/Rant: Patrick was able to qualify mom for medicaid - thank God I was able to avoid that government sponsored "mess" when both my elderly parents died very suddenly.

Rave: Way cheaper meds in MX - as I mentioned on the brief "travel impotence" forum (Cialis is way better than Blue V/"lasts" 36 hours).

Rant: The Panasonic rebate check from my 25 July '04 purchase is still in the mail.

Rant: The Dallas Bank One employees who see their fate after the merger and provide NO services.

Rave: SO is going to SMdA to deal with the paint, tiles, and other details in the new house. I'm staying in D to get my FM-3 visa (to avoid duty and capital gains).

M

Ryan Feb 4th, 2005 12:51 PM

Rant: I read Burns piece as suggested. He's right that this is a reduction in benefits for those under 55 when it their time time collect. However, the problem is that the average person is getting back more in benefits than they paid into the system. Those under 55 will get their money. They just won't get the money of the person paying into the system in the future. The problem with the system now is the payouts per person are greater than they ever paid in. That's why the proposed plan can only make sense if you incur anywhere from $1 Trillion to $4 Trillion of new Federal debt to fill the funding hole.

beachbum Feb 4th, 2005 01:00 PM

Rave: ANYONE in Washington who places solving the nation's problems ahead of partisan politics.

Rant: That I don't think there's anyone to Rave about.

Ryan, we could fund that $1 to $4 trillion by raising taxes. Want to step to the head of the line?

seetheworld Feb 4th, 2005 01:36 PM

Rave: Can never say it enough....IT'S FRIDAY....YIPPIE :d

Rave: The weather...upper 40's - a true heatwave!

Rave: Nice to see the Fodor's editors on board.

Rant/Rave: Paris? Hawaii? Paris? Hawaii? Oh please let the noise in my head stop!!

Wishing everyone a terrific weekend!

Patrick Feb 4th, 2005 01:53 PM

Rant: I'm having a garage sale tomorrow. Something I swore I'd never, ever do again. But it's about all that stuff of my mom's in my garage to get rid of. . .

Rave: After tomorrow we'll be able to get both cars back in the garage!

buckeyemom Feb 4th, 2005 01:57 PM

Rant-Groundhog saw his shadow.

Rave-The sun is out.

Rant-The typo/spelling police here.

Rave-Editors have come out of hiding.

Rave-DD sold over 100 boxes of girl scout cookies.

Rant-Super bowl hype.

Have a great weekend everyone. Stay safe!

mikemo Feb 4th, 2005 02:02 PM

Patrick,
SO and I had my first ever garage sale in Oct after returning from our May - Sept travels. I got an offer for my house from a couple who visited and closed in Dec without an agent and "as is".
Best wishes.
M

buckeyemom Feb 4th, 2005 02:11 PM

Wow mikemo, congrats on the sale of your house. We have been trying to sell ours fsbo and what a pia it is. I have had every realtor in a 100 mile radius call me. They are sly little devils pretending to be interested in buying my house and showing up with sales pitch in hand..Maybe I need to have a garage sale?

Kal Feb 4th, 2005 02:11 PM

M'mo,
I would have dropped by but I already own a garage.

Trish'co,
You guys having another GTG? Nobody told me! :^o

Rant: Not a darn thing.

Rave: Even when it's bad, it's alllllll gooooooood! :)>-

soccr Feb 4th, 2005 02:18 PM

Rant: the smoke-and-mirrors social security flapdoodle. To make privatization work, economy has to do much better than it's been doing. If economy does much better than it's been doing, social security won't need fixing.

Rave: Go Patriots.

mikemo Feb 4th, 2005 02:18 PM

A couple of Fodorites have seen plans/pics/views of the new house in SMdA and want to consider a GTG there.
Maybe September if we are settled in as it's the best fiesta month and the weather is great.
M

Tandoori_Girl Feb 4th, 2005 02:28 PM

RAVE: Man, am I excited! I just booked the U-Haul to head down to Naples tomorrow for Patrick's big yard sale. Yahooooo!

RANT: Cancel that. I have plenty of old stuff of my own. It will only depress me to see more of it. But I hope your mom does well at her sale, Patrick. And don't let anyone talk you down!

RAVE: I'm alive. My son and husband are totally terrific people. And maybe it will be a beautiful weekend, fingers crossed.

RANT: This ss thing is scarey. As is the economy. I hope and pray the bubble doesn't break in the real estate market.

Meesthare Feb 4th, 2005 02:32 PM

Rave: the student nurses I've been teaching, who are going to make wonderful clinicians. They see the problems in the system, they're politically aware, and that isn't stopping them from wanting to enter a difficult and often misunderstood profession.
No rants today! :)

Kal Feb 4th, 2005 02:38 PM

M'mo,
How far's the ocean?
((#)) B-)

mikemo Feb 4th, 2005 03:29 PM

Kal,
PDF!
Check a map - SMdA is in the mountains at the virtual geographic center of MX, but maybe a 5 1/2 drive to PV or the Pacific coastal resorts near there.
M

Kal Feb 4th, 2005 03:33 PM

So I better bring a lot of fishing line, si?

One of the "Sand Bar Irregulars" we meet each year on Kauai used to vacation at SMdA and said good things about it...and if the lovely and always delightful Ms Marilyn gives it a ((Y)), you just may see me and Senorita Kal on an express burro to su casa grande!

wemr Feb 4th, 2005 03:37 PM

Rant: Make note of Feb. 4, 2005. George Bush has announced today through his official mouth piece Condaliza Rice that Iran is the world's worst harborer of terrorists. Today is the start of Bush's next war.

In case some do not remember, the Iraq war started with a speech in 2002 about a so called "Axis of Evil" and a promise to "rid the world of weapons of mass destruction".

Thousands more Americans will probably die in this new war. Sorry if that disturbs anyone but Bush did it before and he promised he would do it again. Hundreds of billions will be spent. We will have another "Iraq" on our hands and we will have no way of getting out.

Mark this day on your calendar and defend your sons and daughters who are thinking about a military future.

vivi Feb 4th, 2005 03:39 PM

Rave: We're going to Hawaii on Sunday!

Fodorite018 Feb 4th, 2005 03:44 PM

wemr--I normally stay out of political discussions. The only thing I will say is that I am glad there are people like my dh who served in the military. He had a long career and is retired now, and if our son chooses the same path, we will support him. We were just on base today and felt very honored to be in the presence of such selfless people. Ok...now back to my usual ignoring political stuff.

PamSF Feb 4th, 2005 03:44 PM

Meetshare~ I've been a hospital based RN for 28 years now(non-stop). I am still impressed people choose to enter the profession and always a wee bit humbled by the "starry eyed" nature of those same folks.

Please lt me go on record as saying, the folks who have impressed me over the years (next to some of my patients and their families) have been those in the trenches with me. Not only do they have amazing strength of character, they are the funniest people I have ever known.

wemr Feb 4th, 2005 04:24 PM

mms, I also had a stint in the military. All that pride and flag waving looks very impressive when you are on or around a base especially when you are young. Its almost hypnotic. I've been there....as a teen and as an adult. The service has a way of sucking you in at first. I support my children just like you do and I will protect them and warn them about getting involved in an Iraq.

The President at the time does not always get it right and lots of Americans have died because of his lack of judgement, and will die because of "the president's" lack of judgement.

This president Will start another war. Remember February 4th. 2005.

cigalechanta Feb 4th, 2005 04:27 PM

Rave, my pooch had his stitches removed and his tumor was benign BIG :)
Finally saw the Long Engagement, fun to recognice places I've seen in Paris and Brittany.
Rant: I've put pounds on because of all the partying to make up for lost time.

LoveItaly Feb 4th, 2005 04:38 PM

Rave: People in the medical field as PamSF is talking about. True angels.

Rave: Our military and their families, no way to ever thank them.

Rave: Spring time in the Sacramento Valley (even though it is still winter). Blue sky and sunshine has really been enjoyed.

Rave: Our new library with all windows on the back wall overlooking our creek and the park. Beautiful!

Rants: Not really anything. Life is too short to rant and rave! At least it seems like it today.

Wishing everyone a fun and happy weekend.

tpatricco Feb 4th, 2005 05:47 PM

Where is Marilyn? I was hoping for a Lulu update! ((@))

annesherrod Feb 4th, 2005 06:03 PM

Rave - warm sunny day, no work either, I ma off for the whole month.
No rants.
Mikemo - We are waiting with much anticipation for your GTG in Mexico!!! did you say you will post photos of your casa?
Yes, where is Marilyn? I bet she is kicking up her heels at a Fabulous party on a veranda overlooking the sea with great drinks with umbrellas in them!!!

shaz60 Feb 4th, 2005 06:16 PM

Rave: The wonderful children and their families who always contribute when our school community asks. They are 75% free and reduced lunch and 60% Southeast Asian. We have raised at least $10,000 this year at a school with 240 students in the inner city. All the money has gone for field trips, fire victims, tsunami victims, etc.
Rant: Those who pull up a thread condemning the fantastic immigrants that I know.
