RANT: Woke up this morning to a FLOOD in our family room and my office!

My computer was sitting in an inch of water. The water was coming in at a rate of at least an inch a minute (right now it's coming in a an inch per five minutes).

I'm taking a break (having my own pity party - crying into a cup of coffee) We have 3 portable sump pumps running in the office where the water is orginating from. Our main sump pump which was put in over 20 years ago when we had our LAST flood is working fine.

We can't figure this out...

Adding insult to injury, we just added this office (had a major addition/renovation five years ago) and paid a small fortune to the engineer and excavating crew put in this elaborate drainage system (dry wells, drain tiles, piping, etc) in to prevent any problems in the new portion of the house.

It worked for 5 years -- what happened?

Any engineers out there who can tell me what has happened??? Really, any ideas?

The carpet, bookcases, etc can be replaced...but my BIG concern is, what if it happens again??

Oh, and I also had just completed 6 hours of research at the library yesterday, and organized the last of my journals -- so proud of myself...had them laid out nicely to work on today -- yes, they were on the floor, nothing but crap today. sob

Okay, I've ranted enought, goto to go help DH.

Rave: My desk top computer was spared from the flood -- that is big relief.

It will take days for everything to dry up -- it is truly a mess. Every bone in our bodies hurt from using the dry vac all day but at least the water has stopped rising and we can shut off the pumps.

I hope it stays dry this week.

Seetheworld--I am SO sorry for the flooding and ensuing damage you're having to deal with--especially with the recent renovations--aggggh! Has there been construction in your area or have any neighbors (assuming you live in a neighborhood) made changes to their yard or landscape? We lived in our previous house 10 years flood / standing water free but something changed during the last two years when water began to reach our back door during heavy rains. We could be wrong but we attributed it to landscape changes made by one of the neighbors. Wish there were something I could do to help! Good luck

cd, Bonnie and dcespedes: Thank you so much for your concern and well wishes.

I think the total rain fall yesterday was 2 inches, but it came in a very short period of time. In addtion, we had a couple of heavy rains over the last week. But we have also had noreasters during the past five years and have been absolutely fine. It's not our first experience with heavy rains. What I find particulary strange is that three days after the landscapers placed fresh topsoil and seed (after the construction), we had a noreaster which closed schools for two days...we watched in disbelief as all of the fresh soil washed down our property and down the street. NO water in our house, however.

We are surmising that due to the spring thaw (however which was rather gradual, with snowfall that was lower than in years past) and the rain, the water table was exceptionally high. But it still doesn't, in my gut, add up.

Yesterday, I felt like we were at battle, racing to keep the water from over-taking our home. Today, we feel like zombies - in disbelief that our home is in such a mess. But I will say, that I am so thankful because so many people actually lose their entire homes to floods and other natural disasters - we were lucky in that regard.

Right now our goal is to dry things up - I have the heat up (only to add to my intermittent hot flashes), and a dehumidifier running. My husband just came home with an industrial dehumidfier, so hopefully that will dry things up. After that, we will assess what needs to be torn up and thrown out. Then we need to empty and move all of our bookcases and see what can be salvaged - it's just a step by step process.

dcespedes: I thought about what you said and actually that thought also crossed my mind. Our topography is unique - we live on a hill (small mountain, actually) but there is also a hill *above* us. And yes, there has been construction in that neighborhood. I think there is some truth in what you said.

I have been told that it will rain on Thursday -- we shall see what happens. After that, we will need to figure out what to do.

Thanks again for your concern, Fodor friends. Hopefully I won't have to rant on Friday
