Fours Days in Manhattan
We had a friend from Yorkshire stay with us for a few days, and took advantage of eating in places normally considered too fattening.
As he had never had Jewish style deli, we went to 2nd Ave. With an explanation of everything he enjoyed it all-corned beef, pastrami, health salad, sour and new pickles, chocolate soda, kasha varnishkes, and sweet noodle kugel. We walked lower Manhattan and ate dim sum at Jing Fong, a variation of Chinese food he had never had. Again with a explanation if boa, siu mai, turnip cakes, bao, and har gow, he gobbled it all up with desert at Chinatown Ice Cream factory. The following day we went to the Met Museum which was surprisingly empty. He wanted to the English artists which also gave us a chance to see Rembrandt and Hals. We then went to the rooftop garden with a wonderful view of the world that surrounds Central Park and they have a high hedge to prevent midgets like myself from falling off. We then went to Au Za'atar for kafta, stuffed grape leaves, fries with sumac, and a cheese dip. We brought home a fewe pastries from Veniero's again something we had no tasted. Both places always offer wonderful food. After the play today, we went to Theater District John's Pizza, which is more than acceptable and a most reasonably priced meal, especially for the area. BTW, Artichoke Pizza has turned into crap. They care more expansion than creating decent slices. Our slices were swimming in tomato sauce, had little artichokes (and meatballs on those slice) and the crust tasted like Bisquick. They have always hired the stupidest people in NY as they had to be trained after every customer, but now there is no reason at all to go there. We saw Doll's House Part 2 today and was only slightly enamored. The language and facial and vocal reactions were very modern and that was jarring. Considering this play was supposed to take place 15 years after the original play, or around 1895 and still takes in Norway, these affectations were distracting. Julie White plays Nora and she rarely rose above the part although she is on the stage for the entire 1 1/2 hours. Jayne Houdyshell as the housekeeper/nursemaid is the only remnant of the original cast and was fine and engaging. The veteran Actor Stephen McKinley Henderson had his moments, but seemed underused and the daughter delivered some finely crafted lines professionally. |

Hmmm....health salad....can't get it here in CA, but I loved it when I was a kid.

Buy a bag of already cut cole slaw mix.
I never measure, but mix white vinegar (main ingredient), sugar, a dash of dry mustard, salt, pepper, and good quality olive oil and then pour that into the salad and toss. If the cole slaw mix does not have onion, you can add some and I also add sesame seeds. If you are so inclined you can shred your own cabbage, carrots, and green pepper. Sorry, I am not more specific. |
That's very helpful. But how is it different from "doctored" cole slaw?

I am not a theologian or a classics scholar so who is the God of Mayo? Is that some provincial Irish God? Someone who runs a clinic in Minnesota?

It was Hellmayo, the god of condiments, and his daughters, the Maionaise who attended to banquets.
By-the-way, love "health salad" at 2nd Ave and even buy it from Morton Williams and enjoy it despite the lack of mayo! "To everything there is a time, and a purpose . . . " |
