Four Season - Maui
Can anyone give there comments and impressions of the Four Seasons Resort on Maui. Any info re: rooms, food, service etc. would be appreciated. Trying to find an upscale resort away from the busier areas like Kaanapali and Lahaina. Thanks.

We stayed there last February and could not have been happier. It is a beautiful, elegant, luxurious property. Spago restaurant is on the hotel grounds and it was fabulous. The Four Seasons is quieter than it's neighbors, like the Grand Wailea, and we were surprised that the lobby area was pretty much empty by 9:30 every night. People are up early, though, and the fitness facilities and classes are also really good (took an awesome spinning class there).
The staff was very hospitable and friendly and we were upgraded upon check-in from a garden view to a water view room. The room was lovely, with a very generous, marble bathroom.
We went into Lahaina one night and ate dinner at the Swan Court at the Hilton in Kaanapali one night (considered one of the most romantic restaurants in the world -- it is lovely, but we had other equally nice -- and less pretentious -- meals there). After going into Kaanapali, we were happy that we stayed in Wailea, especially since we travelled without our kids.

Try the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua. Far enough away from Kaanapali and Lahaina so it is not busy but close enough to take advantage of the things there. It is an outstanding resort. Great service and restaurants! I just got back and would definitely stay there again!

I was there last April. It's a first class place. There are many posts and reviews for this resort on this website.
The service and food are first rate, better in those respects than the Kea Lani and Grand Wailea. The rooms are a good size and the bathrooms very luxurious.
On the negative side, the pools are on the small side, and during periods when school is out, can be too crowded. I found that there is a big competition for pool cabannas in the morning, with the prime ones being taken before breakfast (but at least you aren't being charged extra, which the Grand Wailea and Kea Lani do). Also, only the suites are truly facing the ocean. I got an "ocean view" room which was really only a 1/3 ocean view.
The place does cater to Hollywood celebrities and I did see several when I was there.

I agree with Trover-the Ritz carlton Kapalua is amazing!! The service, the dining (try the Banyan Tree), the spa ,the beautiful rooms and oh that breathtaking beach out front is what you need for a relaxing and luxurious Maui holiday.Kapalua is a very private and beautiful (very lush and green with beautiful beaches and world class golf) part of Maui.It is only a short drive down the scenic highway to Lahaina and Kaanapali. The Four Seasons is also a 5 star luxury resort and there are fabulous restaurants and shopping (Shops of Wailea is a shoppers' dream). The only thing I didn't like compared to the Ritz is that Wailea is very stark and desert looking (not very pretty at first sight) and the Four Seasons is always crazy busy with kids running around. I like the adult, more serene setting at the Ritz. Can't go wrong where ever you stay because you will be in Maui baby!!!!

I will be staying at the Four Seasons in May. How do I get an upgrade from a Garden Room? Do they automatically give it to you or do you have to ask. We will be celebrating our 30th anniv. Will that help?

Couple of comments. First, we've stayed at the Grand Wailea and just love it. Four Seasons does seem beautiful, but there doesn't seem to be much of a pool area at all. Spago's was marvelous.
After reading the posts here, one might think that Wailea and Kapalua are close. They aren't. It would be about a 50-60 minute drive depending on the traffic and time of day.
Kapalua is beautiful, however it tended to be fairly cloudy there and the weather was, lets say less predictable than Kaanapali or Wailea.

We had excellent time at 4s Maui. We love Maui for the beaches, long path along/above the water, views of islands off-shore, and consistent weather. Have stayed at most of the hotels along beach and like 4s the best. Nice rooms, great service. We liked the pool and the free water arobics classes. When my husband requested item for breakfast not on buffet or menu, by the next morning the chef had made it for him and it was available thereafter.
