Found very reasonable motel, is it in a terrible neighborhood

I have been looking everywhere for inexpensive lodging in San Francisco. I have found a travel lodge located at 2011 Bayshore Blvd for only $58 including parking. I went to mapquest and discovered it is less than 3 miles from where my son lives in Mission District. I assume this is a not very attractive neighborhood??

Thanks again for any help

Pam

He has only lived there a month and has not seen much of the city beyond his neighborhood due to work and no car!

You don't need a car to get to know SF, Pam. In fact, they get in the way. Your boy probably has a good idea of what's what from walking around.

Now head over there, see your boy, and have a bottle of good Anchor Steam beer on me.

Will you have a car while you are visiting him? (do you need a place with parking?)

Unfortunately I will have a car. We really don't want to stay in a dump but since we will be in the hotel only to sleep thought we would go in the most economical (but decent) place.

The Bayside travel Lodge is near Candlestick which is quite a way from the tourist areas of SF. But if your some lives w/i 3 miles of there it may be the best option. A car would be necessary if yiu stayed there. It is a typical Travel Lodge - not great, not terrible. It is not an area with anything to do right nearby.

You say "we" so that makes me feel better, I don't like to recommended these roadside places with outdoor corridors to single travelers.

As far as freeway Travelodges go in California, this is probably one of the nicer ones. It is a decent budget choice as long as you're not expecting a mini-Hilton. The area is between two big city parks and just off the freeway. I would not say that it is unsafe but I would not park a cadillac in front of my room or walk the premises at night or with tons of jewelry. The worst thing about places like this is usually the other guests. You don't know who you'll be next door to..might be a trucker needing some sleep, might be a trucker who found someone to have fun with for a night.

AAA approves this hotel with two stars and I would even rate it 2 and a half. The price is certainly right and it's a short drive to your son. It's right on the bus line so if you want to feel better, you might have your son take a ride down there to check it out.

The area is so-so. If you do stay there go to Picalo Pete's (about 2-3 blocks away). It is a New Orleans style deli with great sandwiches, salads, soups, etc. What part of the Mission does your son live in? There is a motorlodge in the Castro that has free parking and there is a lot more to do in that neightborhood (close to the Inner Mission). The Bayshore Travelodge will force you to use your car for EVERYTHING. If you are going to have to use your car anyways, you may want to look at airport hotels. People have been getting it on Priceline for $28 a night including parking. Look at biddingfortravel.com.
