Found a great hotel in San Simeon, CA

I just wanted to recommend this place, where I stayed just one night, before visiting Hearst Castle (about 10 minute drive from this hotel).

Best Western PLUS Cavalier Oceanfront Resort
9415 Hearst Dr
San Simeon, CALIFORNIA
93452-9724
805/927-4688

I did not pay extra for an oceanview room, but the hotel is located right next to the water. I could easily see the surf from my room's front door, which door opened to an outside landing. The property has two or three bonfires set on the beach, with chairs, and it is extremely pleasant at night.

I paid about $138 for my room, without breakfast, but with free parking. Best part was the little fireplace in my room. It was ready to light and was much appreciated on the foggy night. Great little Keurig coffeemaker with selection of coffees and teas in the room's granite countertopped bathroom outer area.

Nice little restaurant on site, too.

If you look at Janis's link, it looks like the photo of the entry area was taken from the building I stayed in. There are a few different two-story buildings, maybe six of them.

I just checked their rates for this Sunday, and one room is $98. I had a senior rate, but it sure wasn't that cheap!

The yurts look like fun, too. We wanted to be as close as possible to Hearst Castle.

We stayed at this hotel a few years ago in an oceanfront room. The rooms are a very decent size. We had balconies that overlooked the ocean and my mum and I enjoyed sitting there at night sipping all the Bailey's in the mini bars. The restaurant is quite good. The two pools are small. We'd go back and I think I've recommended it here.

There are also some nice places to stay in nearby Cambria, and some very cute restaurants there as well.

I'm glad to know this place has the class and views it lacked when we stayed there ten years ago. The ocean was visible from our dated room, but it was far off in the distance.

Yes, I would say it is relatively classy. In ten years, it has probably been improved and renovated. My room looked very current.

There are several buildings, so some could be further from the ocean than mine was. I was on the second floor, in the building across from the reception area.

Rooms in that building open to the outside stairway. There is no elevator, but they do have people to help with your bags.

Peace: I can't really remember - but years ago we checked out several of the places to stay - and more importantly - some of the places to dine. One on the main drag was quite good - tasty fresh fish - and they also had a nice coffee/pastry shop nearby. Will try to google and see if I can remember.

And this hotel at San Simeon - BW Cavalier - is nice - right on the water. Drove through there once.

Hey - we even stayed once on the other side of the hiway - a non-descripts two star type motel - which was ok as it was clean - and we arrived after dark and left early - but if you have time to enjoy it - stay at a place where you have a nice ocean view.

First of all - if you haven't yet been to the Ocean side of PCH/Hiway 1 at Cambria - there are quite a few homes over there and I think a place or two to stay even - and it bears a little spin - so take a look at this map. http://www.cambriachamber.org/ChamberMapClr.pdf

Now as for lodging - we looked at this one - Cambria Pines Lodge - which has nice grounds for strolling.

And we also went for a walk on Moonstone State Beach - and there were a couple of motels there as well, which were oceanfront - including this one - the Fog Catcher: http://tinyurl.com/7ehn399

and a Best Western Plus/Fireside Inn: http://tinyurl.com/849ye2c

Again, we didn't stay at any of these - but did drive by and walk around them a bit, and thought they looked intriguing/future possibilities.

As for restaurants in Cambria - pretty sure Madeline's is the one we liked, and there are others - as well as a couple of wineries nearby: http://madelinescambria.com/ I believe we both had the Salmon that night - although we usually like to order different entrees and split them.

And I believe we also had an aperitif at this place - the Black Cat Bistro - and would go back to try it next time. http://www.blackcatbistro.com/

And Linn's may have been the place I liked to go for morning coffee and a fresh pastry. http://www.linnsfruitbin.com/pages/m...estaurant.html

We have been through there so many times over the years that it sort of all runs together now, but that's my best recollection.

And this is the place we went to when we arrived late once in San Simeon - the Sunset Grill - as it was a. open - and b. recommended by the front desk of the place we were staying just up the street. It was fairly good - and we even went back the next morning for breakfast.

We stayed at the Fog Catcher a few years ago and had an upstairs ocean view room with a fire. Can't remember what paid but we really liked it and are considering it again for our trip this year. Breakfast was only so so but the location on Moonstone beach was fabulous and walking distance to the fantastic sea chest restaurant.
