Fort Worth for 3 days in July
 

Hello World!
We are throwin' down in Fort Worth for 4 days and three nights in early July. We would greatly appreciate your thoughts on what we shouldn't miss, what we should miss and where to break bread during our stay.
Not interested in Dallas only Fort Worth area. Here's tippin' my hat to ya!

Not to miss in Fort Worth:
1. National Cowgirl Museum
2. Kimbell Art Museum
3. Fort Worth Zoo (get there when they open in the morning to avoid the heat)
4. Stockyards experience. See the cattle drives, shop, and drink a cold one in a bar.
5. Billy Bob's in the evening

Where to eat:
1. Riscky's BBQ (multiple locations)
2. Uncle Julio's at Camp Bowie and I-30
3. Fred's Cafe (near Will Rogers Center) for good burgers and cold beer

Actually, Bistro Louise on (far) S Hulen is maybe the best restaurant in DFW - they serve lunch Mon - Sat for a reasonable fare and have a web site.

It'll be hot in July, but I'll be in the UK, and in N Portugal and Central/MT MX in August and Sept.

Cheapseater: If you will be in Ft. Worth July 2, 3 or 4 don't miss Concert in the Garden at the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens. This is a concert by the Fort Worth Symphony with accompanying fireworks. You can get more information and buy tickets at www.fortworthsymphony.com

As the saying goes, if I owned both Texas and hell, I'd rent out Texas and live in hell. Seriously, it will be hot!

Hilarious saying, missypie! I hate heat and humidity so guess the Big T wouldn't be for me!!!

Bonniebroad, come visit in October (for the state fair!), come visit in November, come visit in March or April, but do avoid the summer or you'll hate it.

Thanks for the invite, missypie! If your State Fair is as good as ours in North Carolina (also in October), I might just have to do that. I definitely want to see San Antonio.......the riverwalk.... never been to Texas at all! What city is your Fair in?

The State Fair is in Dallas -- about 4 1/2 hours north of San Antonio. Lots of fun. San Antonio is great, too -- mariachi music on the Riverwalk, the missions, the Alamo, Sea World, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, awesome Mexican food -- you name it!

You might add the Amon Carter Art Museum to your list. It is right next to the Kimball. Ft. Worth also has an interesting waterworks garden and a fabulous Japanese Garden. We like to pick up picnic goods at Central Market.

Actually, the heat and humidity are inversely related in the summer here in DFW - i.e. when it's 90, the humidity may be 40%, and when it's 98 or 99, the humidity is in the 20's.
Still hot, but not as miserable as the Humid upper midwest and east coast when it is hot there.
That said, I leave in July, and Augustfor cooler climes.

Agree, the Amon Carter is sometimes the equal of the world class Kimbell.

We used to drive from Dallas to Ft. Worth to eat at Joe T. Garcia's for Mexican. Loved it. It is down by the Stockyards. Also Billy Bobs? Is that still there?

Oh, and I forgot to mention, it would be worth your while to drive to downtown Dallas to see the Sixth Floor Museum if you haven't seen it. It is the MOST AMAZING museum I have ever seen. It covers scores of muli media info on JFK. And incredibly informative about assasination and the impact that it had on the world. It is only about an hours drive.

We often go to Texas in the summer months to visit relatives. Just make sure you have AC in your car, and if it is white or light colored, all the better. I wouldn't stay outside for any long amounts of time. You'll be fine. Just drink lots of fluids and carry around a fan if you can.

Now come on folks, it ain't so bad.

Dear Heavens,
I have lived in Dallas for 24 years, have a Seer 19 home A/C,and a 40K gallon pool and spa on a heavily wooded/shaded lot.
July and August are still too hot for me, despite the lower humidity than the upper Midwest and the East coast when it gets really warm in all areas.

I take the heat much better than I can handle cold, and I've lived through 22 Texas summers just fine, but I still wouldn't advise a tourist to come here in July and August!

Thanks for all the help for places to break bread and to enjoy on our visit to the closest state to Tennessee that there is. I was once told that in order to qualify to be a Texas Ranger you had to be from Texas or Tennessee...reckon that's true? I can understand the rationale and I'm all for it.
Anyway, being from the South I know it will be hot and figure it will keep too many Yankees from being around!

Can't say I loved Fort Worth but I did enjoy my dinner at Texas de Brazil. The food was very good and there is plenty of it. Make sure you are very hungry if you go!
