Fort Ross from San Francisco
Hello, my fellow Fodorites of the Bay Area and all visitors!
My son plans to go to their annual event - history day, when all employees get dressed in Russian costumes and they have some sort of a festival there on the last Saturday in July. This year it's July 30, and 2 seats for us are reserved in his rented car :) If you drove SF-fort, how long does it take? Yahoo says 2 hrs 8 min from my home at Nob Hill, the fort's website says 3.5 hours from SF. We may have to plan a rest stop if the drive is actually that long. About the food. The website says there is no food, my son said - vending snack machines on regular days (if he remembers!). Do they have long lines for food on this day if any food at all? Any word of wisdom? Anybody else going? |
Hey, guys, stop sinking my question [-X
Wake up, Bay Area! ((O)) |
Faina, I haven't actually done this exact drive, but I don't see how you could make it in 2 hours. I would guess 3 hours minimum.
If there is no food, you can certainly stop for something to go along the way, or Jenner is only about 10 miles south on Rt. 1. |
The last time I was at Fort Ross, I was about 4 years old. I don't have any memory of it - just a picture that tells me I was there ;)

Stopped there on a visit to Gualala recently. It's over two hour from SF but less than three. It also depends on which way you go. It's slower via Bodega than through Guerneville. Lot's of places to eat in Guerneville but I only recall seeing a General Store in Jenner. Don't know if there was food there. There are small vending machines in the gift shop at Fort Ross but not much else.

If you aren't looking at anything enroute and just hitting the road and pressing north I'd give it about 2.5 hours or a tad more.
But if you want food you'll really have to 1) bring it with you, 2) stop and eat along the way or 3) stop in Guerneville or Jenner for basic picnic fixings . . . . |
Thank you, everybody!
If my son rents a car, it will be a "fun" drive, we always argue over the speed limits and from what angle I see the speedometer... Oh, wait, I will be in the back seat this time. Will report anyway! |
