Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri

My son will have basic training here and we want to visit.....who knows anything about this place and where to stay? Modern and comfy? Good places to eat?

cd Aug 10th, 2003 12:57 PM

My husband was there for basic 40 yrs ago so anything he would recommend probably is no longer there! :-) He said something about the strip having tons of facilities. Anyway, just wanted to top this for you and give those who DO know a chance to respond.

ziggy Aug 10th, 2003 12:59 PM

You'll be close to Waynesville and Rolla.

But you will probably get more results if go to the "Missouri" board and post the same question there.

Good Luck

cd Aug 10th, 2003 01:14 PM

We don't have a Missouri board here at Fodor's. All things posted on the United States board appear right here, together.

X_Bellman Aug 10th, 2003 02:01 PM

Rolla is prob your best bet. There isn't really much around the base. Osage Beach is really nice in the fall/summer about 1 hour or so to the north.

Mom lives at Lake of the Ozarks and it is busy now. Eat at JB Hooks overlooking the lake, great food. Also have a friend that is a Capt at Ft. LW, she usually gets the new recruits, he won't get to do anything there as he will be busy for the entire time. He is lucky, my son did his basic at Ft. Benning Georgia...home of the infantry..go Black Knights!!! you will send your boy...the Army gives you back a man, sniff sniff..my son is in year 3 of 6, he loves it.

Sorry cd

But to get to the Missouri board look to the right near the top. You'll find Alabama, Arizona, etc. Scroll down to Missouri, highlight it, then click on "find." There you'll find topics more specific to questions about Missouri.

My God, I'd hate to think that in order to find out answers to questions specific to New York, Florida, or more specific to any state I'd have to go to the U.S. board everytime!

clairelong posted the question at the general U.S. board. If clairelong had followed the going scrolling down to "Missouri" then highlighted it and hit "find" it would have taken him/her to the Missouri board. People with knowledge about the area are more likely to check the Missouri board if they have information about that state.

Sorry you didn't understand.

cd Aug 10th, 2003 07:08 PM

No Ziggy I don't think you understand. If you post a question under a specific state, it still all shows up on the US board.

cd Aug 10th, 2003 07:28 PM

To further clarify, If I wanted to FIND something in a particular state, that is what I would do. However, I do not check each and every state when coming into the Fodors board, nor does anyone else. We check out the Europe board, US board, etc. If there is a question there we know something of, we answer, we do not check each and every state!

ziggy Aug 10th, 2003 09:04 PM

I think we're both saying the same thing. I didn't think you realized that you could refine your search for an answer by going to a specific state.

You said, "We don't have a Missouri board here at Fodor's." Well, we do!

Then with your reply I see that you do know there is a Missouri board. And you are absoutely correct - things posted on the individual state boards DO show up on the national board. I think clarelong would have been better off posting it on the Missouri board instead of the general US board. There are so many people posting that her question got lost very quickly as you alluded to: "just wanted to top this for you."

The question was already buried somewhere after the first 50 posts and very few people would see it because most people - unless they see something right away that catches their fancy on the national board - go to the state board they are interested in.

If you want to ask a question for someone to answer regarding a hotel in Atlanta you go to the Georgia board. You certainly wouldn't page through all the posts about Hawaii, California, Illinois and all the other states at the general US board.

Sorry for the confusion.

Looked through the Missouri board and found just one other Ft. Leonard Wood reference. Question and one answer were:

Message: I am moving from New jersey to be stationed at Ft Leonard wood. I want to be equidistant between Ft L.W. and St louis. so that my drive to work or St louis is 45mins or less if possible.
It seems Washington and Franklin counties are the best choices. Please send me your comments with info such as nice areas, good groceries, safety e.t.c.

Message: I live in Rolla (Phelps County). It's about 30 min. from FLW but about an hour and a half to St. Louis. It's a small college town (pop. 14000). Nice town, lots of FLW employees live here. VERY safe and a very nice town, but very little shopping (for that matter there is very little shopping between Springfield and St. Louis. For groceries there is a Krogers, Wal-Mart Super Center (there is one of these in most towns of any size around here) and a local chain.
I think most locations in Washington and Franklin counties will leave you with a longer than 45 minute drive to FLW.

Claire, look how asking an innocent question started a ruckus. Not all questions ask about a state on the state boards appear on the US forum. Check out Arkansas for example. None of those questions come up. but then nobody comes to AR for vacation!

drsawyers Aug 11th, 2003 09:23 AM

Ziggy,

Your nomenclature is wrong. There is no "Missouri Board". "Missouri" is an OPTIONAL searchable topic within the "United States" forum.

I could just as easily say there is a "Luggage Board" because I always search for posts using the keyword "luggage" (not that I do). The only difference is that, when creating a new thread, the state names are provided for convenience as a preset list of search topics.

In your original post you said: "But you will probably get more results if go to the "Missouri" board and post the same question there."

What you should have said was: "But you will probably get more results if you select "Missouri" from the list of search topics when reposting your question on the US Forum."

Maybe this seems silly and trivial, but you did start the whole thing.

Try http://www.visitpulaskicounty.org/
There are links to the area's lodging. The Waynesville/St. Robert area has built up considerably in the last few years and there are lots of new motels/restaurants. I would stay there instead of Rolla (I live in Rolla) - the lodging is just as nice and you would save yourself a 30 minute drive to the Fort. Lake of the Ozarks is nice, but it is at least an hour's drive and the roads are not particularly great.

Stephie Aug 11th, 2003 11:51 AM

CD is right, there technically is no "Missouri" board, only one for the entire US in which you can do a "find" for any post that lists "Missouri" or "Fort Leon. Wood" in its title or contents. If you were to view the "travel talk home" for its board choices, you would not find Missouri. A few years ago fodors tried one for Hawaii and maybe California, can't remember now. But it didn't fly, so they went back to just all US states together. You could actually go to a board that was only Hawaii and post questions only having to do with Hawaii, that is now not the case for any state.

You might indeed get more responses if you type in FLW and click on Missouri, and then "find." But your post is titled very well, in my opinion because you actually typed in the city and state for which you would like information. Since your post is NOT located in a Missouri forum someone might not know where you were talking about if you did not list the state name which often happens.

When you are initially posting a message and you click on the particular state for which you are asking a question you are simply categorizing your post for times in the future when someone does a "find" on Missouri. It doesn't end up in some magical "Missouri Board" If I did a "find" for Fort Leonard Wood in particular and clicked on "Missouri" in the state choice column, all posts for the state of Missouri would not appear, just those with the words "Fort Leonard Wood" in them.

OK, enuf on that, sorry don't know anything about FLW.
