Fort Lauderdale Westin-Will I need to rent a car?
I'm attending a conference at the end of February at the Westin Beach Resort and Spa in Fort Lauderdale for a few days. I'll have one day free and also evenings. Will I need to rent a car to get around?

Yes.
There are several good restaurants in Ft. Lauderdale.
My wife's favorites are the Blue Moon and Eduardo de San Angel. The latter is not a Mexican restaurant per se, far better than that. Their menu. http://www.eduardodesanangel.com/Menu.html

A lot depends on where you plan to GO during those evenings, etc. I live in Ft. Lauderdale and I would normally recommend a rental car BUT I would also check on the amount you might be paying for parking at the hotel, the overall rental car cost, etc., and again, depending on where you want to go. Taking a couple of taxis might end up being cheaper.

Dukey's right about where you plan to go. A car would be good for maximum mobility, and I'd guess pretty much a must if you're staying at the one on Corporate Drive (which is well north of the city center). If you're at the Westin Beach Resort on Ft. L Beach, you might get by with walking or taking a cab. There is a local bus line along this stretch, but my guess is that it doesn't run evenings.

Hi universitylad,
I stayed in Fort Lauderdale without a car, not far from your hotel. Fort Lauderdale is pretty wretched for the carless but you're probably in the one area of the city where it's feasible to be without although not ideal. I used the water taxi stop not far from your hotel for daytime exploration of the Intracoastal Waterway and ate at places not far from the A1A/Las Olas Intersection. Renting a bike at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park made for a pleasant afternoon. I like to walk and having beach & ocean nearby made the walks more pleasant but boy it seemed I had to walk 30 minutes even to get to an area where supper was even possible! (Mind you, you're several blocks closer to Las Olas Blvd. than I was.)
Have fun whatever you decide! Daniel
