In all of this discussion of the current Broadway season, we've been remiss in not mentioning one of the highlights--the current revival of Sweeney Todd. If I had to pick my favorite of this season, Sweeney Todd would get my vote.

Oh Bugswife, what could ever compare to the punch of Twelve Angry Men? I remember watching even the movie with my mom a million times and wishing I could have once seen it on stage -

and HowardR, glad your intro to the theater was early too - it runs in our family - my mom was a budding actress with a few turns on local stages before my father/marriage/babies - but was always in community theater in our area until her old age !

I think when children are exposed to all types of theater - community theater to broadway- it inspires them in many ways: literature, theory, philosophy, life.....

and my daughter tells me tonight Drowsy Chaperone is on her docket for this week and Sweeney Todd was a gem, and yes, my Jersey Boys CD is playing in the background and no, I don't think I am old !

The Drowsy Chaperone has been voted the best musical of the season by the New York Drama Critics Circle.
Further comment would be superfluous!

"Now we can go back to arguing over if Los Angeles is better than Pittsburgh."

And about travelling with kids and whether there are too many Woogo threads. ;-)

And whether or not Dallas is better than any other Texas city...

Well, if you do want to see it...

You can get a great discount on Drowsy Chaperone tickets. They are for mezzanine, middle priced tickets. Use the discount code PLAYBILL2 when ordering through Ticketmaster. We got ours for $65 each, which seemed pretty good for booking about a month in advance.

Who knows what will happen at the Tony's. But if it gets any decent awards, or if people like the sample performance, discount tickets may end up being hard to come by.

I saw Faith Healer and I was completely spellbound by Ralph Fiennes. Ian McDiarmid was hilarious and both were bang-on for casting. Cherry Jones was not quite as impressive to me but maybe it was just the company she was keeping. The writing and staging make for an unforgettable evening too.

For the record, I have seen some real stinker plays with famous actors, FH isn't one of them.

I looked at Drowsy and it seemed a bit nostalgic for my taste so I passed. To each his own.

Howard,

Saw it last weekend and LOVED it! Absolutely charming, and incredibly well done.

I was explaining to my son, that's how we used to experience a Broadway show. No videos back then, so you'd buy the album, read the synopsis, and study the pictures as you listened.

I thought it was a really cool concept for the show, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

bugswife, did you report back with your review of Drowsy Chaperone? You said above that you were seeing it June 16th. I have tickets to take my 13 yr old daughter in August (along w/Phantom and Wedding Singer).

We saw Spamalot and Caroline or Change in D.C. in the past few wks- what a great summer of theater we are having. My daughter is so inspired that she has signed up for theater arts as her elective next yr (full yr) and wants to audition for summer theater classes at a very good D.C. theater next summer.

So what did you think of Drowsy Chaperone?

Drowsey Chaperone was delightful, and absolutely great for a 13 year old. I really enjoyed seeing a musical that has not been done on Broadway before. I am kind of played out on all the revivals. Chorus Line and Les Mis are returning. Nice to have something new for a change.
As for The DC, the set was very creative, costumes gorgeous, and Sutton Foster just glows. You will have an amazing time.

bugswife1's comment are right on the mark. I'd just add one more comment: incredibly clever!

I'm seeing Drowsy Chaperone tomorrow night. Looking forward to it and will add my review to this post. I agree, it will be nice to see something original.
