For my friends in NW Arkansas: routing from Tulsa to Branson
Hi all,
We're talking about meeting some friends in/around Branson for a long weekend this fall. Mapquest routes me on the interstate, taking I-44 up to Springfield, then south on 65. It looks like a more direct route to take 412 through Springdale, then 65 north to Branson. My questions:
What is that 412 route like? It the scenery worth the extra time (I'm assuming it takes longer since mapquest directs me a different way)?
Is it windy, curvy roads with no place to pass?
Is there a lot of semi traffic? (My DH's blood boils when he can't pass a slow semi!)
Thanks~

I drive from Tulsa to Springfield all the time, and it is right at 3 hours. Branson is only about 30 minutes south of Springfield via Hwy. 65. I would never, ever consider going "the back way" through NW Arkansas. 412 isn't bad to Springdale, but after that, it is a long, windy drive on two-lane roads all the way. There is basically no place to pass on that part.
There is lots of semi traffic on I-44, but it moves. I drive about 80 (at least on the OK turnpike) and I usually get passed. On the MO side of 44, the speed limit drops, and there is often a policeman clocking traffic as you cross into MO.
If it were me, I would pick I-44 and 65.

I agree with the above. To make it interesting go the back roads home to Tulsa. Some of 412 is 4 lane. There are alot of quaint little shops and restaurants along the route. Since it will be fall if you hit it just right and the summer weather allows, the leaves may be changing. I recommend a stopover in Eureka Springs Arkansas.
