Cricket, I'm on the island of St. Eustastius in the Dutch West Indies. It's not on most maps since it's only about 8 or 10 square miles, so I'll explain that I'm smack in between Saba, St. Maarten, St. Barth's and St. Kitts.

Oh, wow. Good luck. This must be awful for you, but I bet living there is wonderful most of the time. Where would you go should a hurricane hit?

Glad you're okay Statia. This hurricane season is absolutely unbelievable. We are scheduled to go to New Orleans (for the first time in many years) on 9/22. Hope it works out okay, but certainly more important than our trip is the safety of the city and the people who live there.

Actually, Cricket, the weather from Jeanne is improving a bit every hour here on St. Eustatius, so I think we are in the clear now.

As far as evacuating for hurricanes, we've lived here nearly 12 years, and have stayed here during category 3, 4 and even 5 hurricanes, although we typically head to our solid concrete bunker for category 3 and higher. :O

I have to admit that if you would have told me I would do such a thing many years ago, I would have said you are nuts. However, we honestly have so much less infrastructure here than in the US or most other islands, so it's actually easier to get up and going after the fact, although we can still typically sustain devastating damage.

Thanks for your thoughts. :) I am hoping nothing more comes off Africa this season, for all of our sakes, but I think I'm starting to give up on that idea. :(

I'm supposed to go to Miami next week. I may just forget it and head to Cancun.

It has been rainy, overcast, tropical storm, hurricane, yucky out since the end of July when all this weather mess started.

I'm sick of worrying. I'm sick of being sick of this.

We are leaving for Portland Oregon on Monday and I will be in another state of rain, but at this point, as long as a hurricane is not coming along with the rain, I will be happy~sigh~

Well, Jeanne has come and gone over Puerto Rico. The trajectory changed while it was over the island so we got a little more wind than we expected. I lost a few trees. We do not have water or power but there was no major damage. Some areas are heavily flooded. I still had to come to work (we have a power generator) but it still looks like a ghost town - careless interneting for the rest of the afternoon:)

I hope everyone else facing Jeanne will stay safe. The death toll from the storms this year is getting quite alarming.

As if this hurricane thing isn't annoying enough, two of the major weather services are predicting totally different paths for Jeanne.

Weather.com is saying it will head mainly for the Carolinas, while accuweather.com predicts it will head diagonally across FL to the panhandle.

Shall we start a ghoul pool?

Jeanne can land on my house as long as it isn't more than a Category 1 Hurricane. And it better be boogying across the state.

I work at the Post Office in Gainesville, FL, and late this afternoon they said the national weather service is now predicting Jeanne will take a sharp left turn at about Daytona Beach and go right over Gainesville. Other weather services have it going straight up the east coast. How can they be so different?

tonight while around 7:00 pm, I heard that Jeanne is a weaker storm than before, is taking her time over the mts on Hispaniola, and may or may not regain strength on her way to the States. There was not a lot of concern shown at the time of that report ( in Jax Fl)
