For anyone going to Vegas
I'm not good at trip reports but I thought for those of you planning a trip to Vegas I would suggest the Penn & Teller show at Rio.
I am not into magic but hubby wanted to go and I admit it was soooooo worth it! This quirky duo is great. We had so much fun. If your not familiar with them - beware they aren't typical magicians and very much on the dark side of humor. They do have a website and tickets can be ordered thru the hotel site. Lily |
Lily-
How much for the show? Did you stay at the Rio? I am deperately trying to find a comfy bed in Vegas-How was yours? |
The Amazing Jonathan you would also like, if you enjoyed Penn & Teller. I heard he was moving to the strip from off, so I'm sure his prices will go up.

I haven't seen the Penn and Teller show, and I have a reason why I never will. When they first came into town, they had a commercial where in one room, some guys who work for the show had a guillotine (sp?) and a kitten. They said "Watch this" and all you hear is the swish of the blade. One of the main guys (Penn I think) watches and says, "huh". Of course, in the next scene, they show the kitten to prove they didn't kill it.
I was deeply offended by this commercial. I don't think violence against animals is funny at all. Is this the dark side of their show? Sorry for the semi-hijacking of your thread, Lily - I just feel strongly about their show. |
A perfect example. If you're deeply offended by the above, you shouldn't even consider P&T. However, if you like David Letterman-type humor & want to learn how magicians do a lot of their tricks, you'll enjoy the show immensely. A lot of it is very anti-establishment, and I personnally find them extremely funny and talented, but they aren't for everyone. |
I know that sense of humor is a personal thing. I'm incredibly offended by violence to animals as well. But maybe it's because of that I happen to think scenes like the one in Something About Mary with the frizzled dog is hysterically funny. I know it isn't real. And there's that new movie coming out with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, where they show the car zooming over the little funny dressed Penquin that was planned to make her stop, that leaves me laughing every time I've seen it. Of course, no animal was hurt making it, I guess I just find the idea funny.
I don't think there's anything really funny about someone falling and hurting their tailbone or getting hurt, but I'll still laugh at a picture of somebody slipping on a banana peel any day. And what's funnier that a good pie in the face? Anyone who doesn't find that funny, just doesn't have much of a sense of humor in my opinion. Sorry. |
Patrick-
I know what you mean and I agree to a great extent. Slapstick comedy is a great source for lightweight humor. In the commercial, they had this scrawny kitten, straining to get to a bowl of milk. They showed the kitten sticking its head eagerly through the guillotine to get to the milk before the camera cuts to Penn and you hear the swish. It just seemed incredibly tasteless to me, that's all. If they did stuff like that in the show and I didn't know it, I would be offended there, too. I turn my head when it comes to most things in this town, because it comes with Vegas. This just went too far for me. |
The humor is really dark at times, and of course you have to like that sort of thing. I never believe torture of people or animals is ok. If I were a real "animal lover" I might have a problem with the show. The whole show does not focus on animals however (in fact there were not any kittys in it) I do remember a bunny in a bag, that was an especially funny act.
Luckily we are all different in this world and some of you will love this show. We paid about $45 a ticket and no we did not stay at Rio, we stayed at Treasure Island in a suite which was a great sleep (when we finally got too tired to gamble). We've also stayed at Bellagio, Luxor and LV Hilton all have been very nice. we go by price but like to be on the strip. Lily |
All this talk about Penn & Teller got me interested in going to their show this week when I was in Vegas. My friend & I trekked to the Rio to buy tickets only to find that P&T were on vacation until next week. Bummer |
