Also in regards to emergency exit rows... The rule is that during taxi, takeoff and landing there can be NOTHING blocking the exit (foot hangers, blankets, Jackets, pillows). But in flight pretty much anything goes, so if you'd like to rest your feet on your carry on , by all means go ahead, just make sure it is restowed for landing. Also a side note, if you are sitting in the emergency exit row on a red eye (or any other flight) you must be awake and alert for takeoff and landing. If you've had to much to drink during your flight the attendants can also ask you to change seats. (as an ex- airline employee I can tell you this has been done more than once)
