Foodie Tour in Boston!

We signed up for the Chinatown Food tour with http://www.bostonfoodtours.com/

They offer a North End Tour as well - I grew up outside of Boston and felt that I knew the North End a little bit but knew nothing of Chinatown since the surrounding area was a bit dangerous (30+ years ago) when I was a teen. So I picked the Chinatown tour for something different....

It was fabulous! Our tour guide was Jackie, she is half Japanese and is married to a man that is half Chinese. She lives right in the area. She was bubbly, knowledgable and entertaining! We got a history of Chinatown while sitting in a beautiful park at the beginning of the Boston Greenway (including some tidbits about the Chinatown gate). We sampled pork, pasteries & bubble tea at different places; visited a pharmacy and grocery store and ended with a Dim Sum lunch (included).

I never had Dim Sum and I have to say it was a great experience (Jackie did all the ordering). My husband has spent quite a bit of time in Asia and said he felt it was so authentic that we could have been in Singapore.

Jackie gave us a printout of all the places that we visited , a list of restaurant for our return visit (and their specialties) and answered all of our questions. She has a blog which includes a recipe for a homemade nut/spice mixture that she brought for us to try (really yummy) - http://jacquelinechurch.com/nuts-to-...ve-spice-nuts/

I won't give away any of the details, but this is a really, really great tour! We will probably try the North End tour in the future as well....

We then walked back along the Greenway. Boston has done a great job transforming this space. It was a busy end of summer Saturday and there were food trucks everywhere! If we hadn't just eaten, I would have snacked at a few. I guess I didn't realize how big these have become in Boston! One had a line of at least 30 people!

I've been on both tours and both are great. My husband, the city-hater was fascinated by the Chinatown tour and we both enjoyed the dim sum lunch. We went back to do some shopping at the market. There isn't shopping time on either tour so people should plan some additional time. And don't wait until the last minute to book a tour. They are popular.

Hi yk - I don't remember the name of the Dim Sum place, but it was in the leather district - it seemed to be outside of Chinatown but on the same street as the Chinatown gate. I searched "Dim Sum" Boston on Yelp and the only one in that area is Hei La Moon... I am not 100% sure that was the one, but it likely was... My Chinatown sheet is at my other home so I can't check, but will do so next time I am there and let you know for sure!

adnil, thanks. It probably is Hei La Moon. That's where we usually go for dim sum if we have a big group or want to sit/eat for a while (we were just there last Sunday)!
