Foodie looking for San Diego recommendations

I'm looking for the best San Diego has to offer for thai, indian, chinese, mexican cuisine, and any of your other favorite restaurants. It can be a dive or a high end restaurant, as long as the food is delicious.

I've heard about Rubio's on The Travel Channel, for great fish tacos. Do you agree, or do you have another personal favorite?

Thank you.

For fish tacos, I like Rubios. The Brigantine has good fish tacos too, but the best are at George's Terrace in La Jolla.

Casa Guadalajara in Old Town has good Mexican food. A great place to eat after visiting Old Town.

I don't think San Diego is particularly known for good ethnic food other than Mexican. It's certainly not where I'd chose to have Indian.

TahitiTams who lives in La Jolla recommends Hacienda de Vega in Escondido for Mexican.
haciendadevega.com

George's in La Jolla is considered one of the city's best. There are 3 different restaurants as I recall, the dining room, the more casual terrace and a bar area.

I had a nice, but not outstanding Asian meal at Roppongi, also in La Jolla. They have nice outdoor habachi tables. The appetizers/small plates were better than the entrees.

Can't beat a Rubio's Fish Taco but the Brigantine for Happy Hour for $3 Fish Tacos is outstanding too..
Georges at the Cove in La Jolla is overall one of the top 3 for great seafood/view.(I like the terrace)
Hacienda de Vega for Mexican is probably one of the best I have ever had but we have some of the best taco shops in SD..Roberto's in Solana Beach is my fav...also, Taco Surf in PB.
Love Los Quatros Milpas under the SD bridge..the best and the salsa is hot!
Point Loma Seafoods for any type of fish sandwich..
Taka for sushi in the Gaslamp.
Best Burger is either Rocky's in Crown Point/PB or Hodad's in OB..
I love Indian Food but can't really think of a place that is worthy in SD..
I love Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe for country french.
San Diego has really stepped it up on the Food in the last 10 years and it is wonderful for all of us who live here and visit..
Enjoy!

I am really liking Vagabond on 30th (could be 32nd st.)and Juniper these days. Took the grandparents last week for lunch and we all loved it. However make reservations.

My other favorite (high end but well worth it) is in Del Mar/ Solana Beach and called Pamplemousse Grill. Very delicious.

In Gaslamp, everyone really loves Chive.

The suggestion to look at Signonsandiego.com is good because their review places every week and mentioned some new restaurants this past month.

I agree with Tahititams about Point Loma Seafood, Hodads/Rockys and Los Quatro Milpas.

My dive Mexican place is El Cuervo Taco Shop on Washington and Front street in Mission Hills. They have a great shrimp plate and wonderful cerviche tostados.

There is a chef in town name Isabella Cruz who is getting a lot of attention these days (she has a cookbook coming out). Her main place is in Pacific Beach off of Cass st. called Cantina. She serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is very goo plus she has a chef's table that my cooking club really likes.

If you are a foodie, then I would check out the farmers market in Hillcrest on Sunays as well as the fruit/veggie stand "Chinos" up in Fairbanks Ranch/Rancho Santa Fe area. Chinos supplies all the great restaurants (such as Chez Panisse)with their veggies. Its fun to see all the great produce.

Hope this info is helpful.

Thanks everyone. I've seen Hacienda de Vega recommended quite a bit. I lived in the San Francisco area for a few years, but since moving away I just haven't been able to find mexican restaurants that come close to what I had come to expect.

I'm surprised that there weren't any stand out thai or chinese restaurants mentioned. That's ok, you've given me plenty of other places to try.

I will definitely check out the farmer's market in Hillcrest. Thanks, everyone.

Wow itsv..you really have a handle on great food in SD!
I love el cuervo taco shop..
Chive rocks and how can you not love Pamplemousse!
I have not heard of Vagabond so thank you for the tip.
Cass Street Bar & Grill in PB has the best Asian Chicken Salad.
Dumpling Inn on Convoy street in Kearny Mesa is a hole in the wall that has some of the best dumplings and I get them pan fried and always rated in the top 10..located next to Jasmine.

You guys are great! Thanks for the tip. I just went back and read the post by itsv. I love a good mexican dive, and El Cuervo is now on my list of places to dine.

I would highly recommend Candelas in the Gaslamp Quarter. They serve Mexican food, but not the "traditional" you normally think of. My husband and I loved the food and margaritas. We hope to go back the next time we are in San Diego.

If you like Thai food, then I recommend Taste of Thai. Their Pad Thai and Curry dishes taste just like I had on a trip to Thailand a couple years ago. There's one in Hillcrest and in Del Mar:

Don't miss 1500 Ocean at the Hotel Del Coronado for an amazing meal in San Diego. The Sheerwater at the Del is also nice for breakfast and lunch. It is strictly a buffet for breakfast, but very good with beautiful views of the ocean from the outside areas.

We also enjoyed the Rhinoceros Cafe for lunch in Coronado and Miguel's Cocina for Mexican food. These are both more casual restaurants in Coronado.

In La Jolla, the CrabCatcher is good for clam chowder and George's at the Cove on Prospect was excellent. They have been remodeling, so check and see when they will open again. Enjoy your travels and have fun! ***kim***
