Hi! I will be in nyc during the first 2 weeks of december.
i think i will do something different this trip, and not buy any food from grocery stores because i just dont want to risk attracting any critters to my room

Whole Foods is more than a grocery store. You could seriously buy food and eat there, at least I know you can at the 14th Street location and the Columbus Circle location. There's also a jamba juice at the CC location, if you're missing a dose of California.
Was trying to figure out what freebie shows were going on during that time. The only thing I can think of are the Xmas lights at Rockefeller Center, and the store windows all around town, particularly Lord & Taylors, Macy's, and Saks.

We have whole foods in my city and I pretty much boycott it (long story about what it represents in sf, but I wont go into that here). Also, I only want to eat or shop at places that do not have branches or stores in SF.

Two points - avoid buying bagels from the carts, they are pre-buttered (or cream cheesed) and are usually cold. Go to a real deli or bagel shop where they can toast it or whatever. Coffee from the carts is fine.
Re: your question about playing card coffee cups, are you talking about the Greek key coffee cups? http://tinyurl.co.uk/2sgq
If so, they are everywhere, delis, carts, etc.

I understand about the boycott thing. My son won't return to Rice to Riches because they don't recycle the plastic bowls they serve their rice pudding in.
But Whole Foods is great for good and reasonable meals. They have great veggie options.

seetheworld---for a true recycled and green earth and save the earth feel in a grocery store, I much prefere a co-op called rainbow. to me, whole foods is just a bit too pretentious and overpriced for my liking. no offense.

In addition to New York Magazine's website - Time Out New York also has great information. They have a broadband site www.timeoutnewyork.tv that actually shows videos of all kinds of places to go in NYC and the writers make recommendations and talk about prices and things. Very helpful for planning a trip.

Oh, I forgot. Go to www.restaurant.com and check for coupons too.
