Folly Beach vs Isle of Palms

Looking into a Spring trip to Charleston with a few days at the beach. Which would be better for a nice beach? We like hotels/resorts. Thanks.

The beach is essentially the same in both areas. If you like resorts stay at Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms, you won’t be disappointed. Depending on when in Spring you go the ocean water may be too cool for swimming.

As a lifelong Charleston native, isle of Palms was the fancy side and Folly Beach was the locals side. That has certainly changed now as both beaches are very popular with both locals and tourists. Folly has a very beachy vibe and a fairly unique atmosphere, along with some great restaurants and bars. The city has been trying to curtail the drinking at Folly and it can attract a somewhat younger, heavily drinking party crowd. Note, the fishing pier is currently closed and being replaced with a new one. If you do go to Folly, try driving to the end of the island (one side has a state park, the other is residential) and you can park in public spots and walk to the Morris Island Lighthouse beach. You won't be able to get to the lighthouse, but its a very beautiful place to see.
Isle of Palms is a but more laid back, but there are a lot of shopping and restaurants within a short drive. Still nice, but not as much character as Folly. You can always try Edisto Beach for a more traditional "Charleston" beach before everything became so touristy. It's a really nice stretch of sand filled with shells and not much commercialization.
You're welcome to check out my blogpost on things to do in Charleston, hopefully you find it helpful.
