foliage trip with dogs
 

We can only go october 6-9th. Not too far north so we do not have a long car ride. have checked a lot of pet hotel sources. Just thought someone might know of a gem out there in southern ny or northern pa or southern conn. thanks

A drive up the Taconic Parkway in NY and up into western Mass. would be really nice. I don't know of places that will take dogs, but there are websites that have this info so google pet friendly inns and check out places in Pittsfield. If you didn't want to go into MA there should be places in NY along that route.

are you looking for special hotels - or just hotels that take dogs?

When we go on trips with our dogs, I always find it easier to first decide where the human element wants to go. [Where are they saying the foliage will be best this year? I thought I saw an article in the Times about this recently?] Then start poking around for pet-friendly places to stay and parks and beaches to visit. I don't go by those lists of pet-friendly hotels, since the information changes too much. I just do my research on the internet, then call and ask whether they'll accept dogs. I have had decent luck with Best Western and a lot of the other chains; while lacking in ambience, you at least know exactly what you're getting. There are also B&Bs that will let you take your dog - like I suggest, call to confirm, and don't assume if it says "no pets" that's always the case. Ownership changes, or else they post to discourage pet owners, but might make an exception after talking to you, etc. etc.

if you are just looking for a clean place to sleep - we used to just call the Holiday Inn 800 number and asked who would take pets along our way.

One recommendation - if you use the 800 number for Holiday or Quinta or any other - make sure that you call the hotel itself to confirm that they know you are bringing a pet. 3 times we got to the hotel and we had problems because the 800 clerks did not record the pet reservation properly. And the 2nd and 3rd time we were very careful to make sure to remind them to make note of the pet.

The problem is that we'd get in very late and they would have given away all of the pet rooms. It all worked out fine in the end - but after the third time I said - what do I need to do to be sure this doesn't happen again and was told to just ask for the local number and call the actual hotel to confirm that the pet reservation. Haven't had any problems since.

Thanks for all the suggestions. This time I was looking for a resort or family"ranch" or something a bit different, but fun for all. See, I am a fun girl after all. Thanks again.

Ive been doing research for a foliage trip as well and I, too, will have my doggie! I found Select Registry (http://www.selectregistry.com) was helpful b/c you can choose b&b by location and amenity (eg: pets accepted). I found a bunch!

The title brings a picture to mind of little dogs growing from trees..
Every fall we would drive from NYC on the Taconic to Rhinebeck where we would pick our own apples and go to the Aerodrome then have dinner at the Petit Bistro across the street from the Beekman Arms..the smell of woodsmoke, the frosty air..sigh. I am sooo homesick :)
