Fog "Season" Along Oregon Coast?

I am in the very early stages of planning a road trip to Oregon and since we want to linger along the coast for a bit, I am wondering what the best time of year might be to minimize foggy days, if that is even possible.

We want to minimize crowds, take advantage of shoulder season motel rates, and prefer mild temperatures so I am thinking May/June, or September/October.

The stop is in the middle of a 40-day adventure that will kick off in Connecticut, so we would hit the area 14-16 days after we leave.

Thank you very much.

I think Sept would be the best time - usually pretty nice that time of year
May and June are frequently cool and rainy

my experience with California and Oregon coasts are that you might be in fog for 20 miles then clear for anohter 20. I actually enjoy some of it, but I can certainly understand wanting to avoid it as well.

No kiddin, sunbum. We set records for rain in both May and June this year around Portland. September on the other hand, is usually one of the nicest weather months of the year, and as a result, rates don't change in most places until October. But, don't wait too late into September to come, since rains usually start again sometime around the middle of October.

As for fog, unlike in California, I don't know that any area of the Oregon coast is more foggy than others, or that any time of year is foggier than the rest.

The foggiest I ever saw the Oregon coast was in July and it was so foggy you could not even see the ocean from the hwy- as we started driving inland to Eugene, it started warming up and by the time we got here, it was 105 in Eugene-

Didn't appreciate either extreme.

Thank you for the advice, everyone. It's looking like a September trip.

While I do enjoy a bit of fog on the coast for the atmosphere if it burns off, it can be frustrating if it's so thick and all you can see -- especially if it's a beautiful place, the only time you will ever be there and getting there wasn't easy!

I drove down the Oregon Coast at the end of September 2008. The whole southern coast was completely fogged in from Bandon all the way down, for two days solid. So you never know with the weather. It could be fogged in any time of the year. If planning a trip, I'd try to shoot for early to mid September though.

I will do that, Andrew. Thank you.
