Fodorites unite! Save the planet.

What are you doing on July 20? Could you could spare a few moments to help make history? If so, the organisers of World Jump Day would like to hear from you.

Don't know if this is on the level but it's fun to imagine everyone jumping up and down at precisely the same time!

Tandoori_Girl Apr 21st, 2005 08:07 AM

do you really think this will make a difference?

ahhnold Apr 21st, 2005 08:26 AM

Not only will this stupid idea not accomplish anything, but I am curious as to why this is fun to imagine. Why not encourage everyone to have sex at the same time. You will get a higher turnout.

beachbum Apr 21st, 2005 08:37 AM

You might get a higher turnout, ahhnold, but you'd also be exacerbating global overpopulation. At least jumpday is targeted towards fixing a problem!

ahhnold Apr 21st, 2005 08:41 AM

Have you heard of birth control devices before.

FainaAgain Apr 21st, 2005 08:56 AM

Ahhhnold, when? I'm in! ((P))

jlm_mi Apr 21st, 2005 08:57 AM

This has got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard! :p

Not only would it never work, but who are we to think we should move the earth off its current orbit anyway????? Oh, and what does "make a more homogenous climate" mean? I interpret that as "kill off all known life forms so that everything on the earth is homogenously lifeless". ;)

But jump all you want. I'm not worried :)

Scarlett Apr 21st, 2005 09:00 AM

So one could combine the ideas of a Jump Day and Love In by Jumping on the one you love at the appropriate moment.
I have heard no complaints from a certain Yankee when he gets jumped on ! ((L)) LOL

ahhnold Apr 21st, 2005 09:02 AM

My ideas always stir more interest. I'll jump on my wife all day on July 20th. ;)

ElendilPickle Apr 21st, 2005 09:02 AM

I like the way you think, Scarlett - and so does my dh! ;-)

jette Apr 21st, 2005 09:02 AM

Well of course it's stupid. That's kind of the point. Cripes you guys, lighten up little.

seetheworld Apr 21st, 2005 09:11 AM

Gosh, my husband has been away all week. Sorry, but I'm not waiting until July 20th ;)

beachbum Apr 21st, 2005 09:37 AM

Guess it's hard to discern written tongue-in-cheek. Even so, I'd have thought you'd be opposed to passing out free condoms, ahhnold.

Scarlett, I like your idea too. The timing thing might be tough to work out though. ;-)

rb_travelerxATyahoo Apr 21st, 2005 10:02 AM

Wouldn't you need only people on one hemisphere jumping?? If everyone everywhere jumps, they'd cancel out the effect of those on the opposite side of the planet.

Not that I think 1/2 would work either. Or..

suppose it did, but a miscalculation sent us hurtling into, or away from the sun?

See below from museumofhoaxes.com:

World Jump Day
The folks at World Jump Day plan to shift the orbit of planet Earth in order to "stop global warming, extend daytime hours and create a more homogenous climate." They'll achieve this by having 600 million people jump up in the air at the same time on July 20, 2006. And they're looking for jumpers! This, of course, recalls the old idea that "If all Chinese jumped at once, cataclysm would result." This has been debunked by The Straight Dope, which points out that the force generated by one billion Chinese people jumping up in the air at the same time would only be equivalent to about 500 tons of TNT. In other words, not that much. However, I don't think the creators of World Jump Day intend for anyone to take their idea that seriously. The site is registered to a German artist, Torsten Lauschmann. According to his web bio Lauschmann: celebrates glitches, and out-takes, bits in between and images that might be easy to ignore. Lauschmann is currently on a Trans European busking tour under the guise of Slender Whiteman where he will launch his solar powered dub system. He lives and works in Glasgow. Lauschmann also appears to be a member of a German art group called Vene Hammerschlag, which has also hosted World Jump Day on its site. In other words, World Jump Day appears to be some kind of art project hoax.

FainaAgain Apr 21st, 2005 10:57 AM

At what time should I jump? Pacific standard time or daylight saving time?

What time is it now in China?

jlm_mi Apr 21st, 2005 11:32 AM

Faina - I think you can get all the details you need on their site. :D

And jette - You don't think people on this thread have already lightened up? Goodness - everyone's talking about a love-in. What does it take to appear lightened up???? :)

placeu2 Apr 21st, 2005 12:01 PM

If I participate in the "love in" aspect of this special day....

How long do I have to keep it u.... er...going? Length, er...I mean time is not my long...er I mean my strong suit.

Just checkin

placeu2 Apr 22nd, 2005 10:34 AM

topping for Earth Day!

PamSF Apr 22nd, 2005 02:14 PM
