Flying to UK

Are they taking everything out of your carry ons?
How many hours in advance should we get to the airport?
We are flying Tuesday from newark to Heathrow

They? No. YOU are supposed to take out the items that are not allowed!

Read for yourself.

Re: amount of time...What does your airline carrier suggest? I would arrive with no less than 3 hours, but some things you need to actually figure out for yourself.

Gardyloo Aug 10th, 2006 03:33 PM

Check your airline's website. Most airlines are imposing the "UK" rules (no carryons, period) on US > UK flights, same as UK > US.

MelissaBeckoff Aug 10th, 2006 03:43 PM

Yes I know that we are supposed to follow the rules but what the people who don't follow the rules? If everypne did what they were told to do, then we would not have any problems.

seetheworld Aug 10th, 2006 03:46 PM

What are you talking about? Could you possibly clarify your post, Melissa?

The rules must be followed, or you don't fly.

starrsville Aug 10th, 2006 04:14 PM

What???

MelissaBeckoff Aug 10th, 2006 06:25 PM

I know that the rules must be followed.
All i am asking is this:
Are the screeners taking everything out of the carry on luggage?
Yes, I know that we are not suppossed to carry items that are on the prohibited list.
But not everyone follows the rules

TheWeasel Aug 10th, 2006 06:37 PM

It's not clear, but I think you're really trying to ask: are the screeners emptying out all carryon bags to check for banned substances? In other words, do they physically go through each and every carryon and remove every item to search for banned items?

Am I correct?

ParrotMom Aug 10th, 2006 06:43 PM

pack all your makeup... I don't know if you can bring a large purse for $$ papers and jewelry.. right no it seems very confusng.. I think they are recommending three hours berore the flight..

Gardyloo Aug 10th, 2006 06:58 PM

If you're flying on Continental, your carryon will be subject to both initial and gate screening, and any unpermitted items will be removed.

If you're flying on BA or AA (or probably UA) the question is moot because NO carryon bags are permitted.

Check with your airline. Not complying with their rules runs you the risk of delay or denied boarding.

MelissaBeckoff Aug 10th, 2006 07:21 PM

Yes that is what I am asking

Are they taking everything out of your carry ons?

Some airports do this more or less already....all do it randomly...

Maybe get there a bit before you usually do? Which should be 60-90 minutes anyway:)

janisj Aug 10th, 2006 09:22 PM

melissa: It is VERY simple. if you don't -- they will

(Currently the most stringent rules are for your flight back home. Right now you would not be allowed any carry on at all except for basically your wallet and medicine)

gail Aug 11th, 2006 02:48 AM

Melissa - I think this is the confusion. In the past, they took out and returned items to your carry-on. In this case, you can not even carry them on, regardless of inspection. You have to put them in your checked luggage or will be forced to find something else to do with them.

Part of the confusion is that these regulations are less than 24 hours old and a response to an identified threat. Just like after 9/11, they will likely be modified over next days and months.

mooselywild Aug 11th, 2006 02:54 AM

Yep....I think they'll be both loosened and tightened greatly over time.....

Dreamer2 Aug 11th, 2006 03:32 AM

If you cannot take a "carry-on" - there will be nothing to remove.

As I understand it, woman are even being asked to remove their lipsticks and toss them if going in/out of London. Depending on which airline, you may not even be able to carry a purse. If I were flying in the next week to London, I'd get one of those wallets with a shoulder strap, put minimum money in, one bankcard, one credit card, one passport, one other id. That's it.

Not saying you, Melissa, but I just don't understand why people in general want to play games and think they will be "the exception." That's what slows everybody down. Think of how much more quickly flights could be boarded/disembarked if everyone just walked on unencumbered. But I do feel sorry for the flight attendants (flying lipstickless, that is) and the moms trying to bring wee ones. (Although, I did hear on the TV that one of the people arrested was a young mother who was going to use baby formula to smuggle her explosive.)

Go to Newark 3.5 hours before departure.

Bring your ticket and passport to board. Check everything else when checking in.

mah1980 Aug 11th, 2006 08:31 AM

follow the rules. you're not going to be counseled on how to break the rules.

nytraveler Aug 11th, 2006 10:04 AM

If you can't follow the rules don't go.

You may know you're not a terrorist - but no one else does - or rather that you;re not an idiot pawn (as they've used before) and which in your case sounds quite likely.

How hard is this to understand? Just follow the rules - and donlt hold up hundreds of other people playing games. Or don't go.

michelleNYC Aug 11th, 2006 10:05 AM

nytraveler: =D> Seriously...

MelissaBeckoff Aug 11th, 2006 10:10 AM

I really don't know why I am being name called and insulted.
I simply asked a question which was :
are they physically taking everything out of your carry on?
I am not trying to break the rules or take items which are restricted.
I was just wondering if they are , then I will consider checking our carryons.
Melissa

janisj Aug 11th, 2006 10:44 AM

As I said -- If it is prohibited - if you don't remove it (and either put it in your checked bag or throw it away) before screening -- they wil throw it away for you.

What else are you asking??

Dreamer2 Aug 11th, 2006 10:57 AM

Melissa,
Are you flying British Air? If so, you WON'T HAVE any carry-ons.

MikeT Aug 11th, 2006 11:00 AM

The answer is "yes." You are only allowed a few things and if you have more, it will be thrown out. Plan to check everything except the most primitive basics if you are flying to the UK.

Some airlines are allowing you to book to other cities in Europe where you can carry on more things.

lcuy Aug 11th, 2006 11:18 AM

You are not allowed carry ons to the UK. You will be given a ziplock bag and allowed your travel documents, passports, wallet, etc and thats all. If you show up at the security line with a carryon bag, or forbidden items like lipstick or water bottles, you will either have to go back to the airline checkin line and check it in, or you will have to throw it away.

You should arrive at Newark 3 hours in advance for a UK flight.
