Flying to Fort Lauderdale
We'll be cruising out of FL in February and flying down from NY.
The only non-stop flights to FL seem to be on Spirit Airlines with their not-great record. All other non-stops fly into MIA. Wondered if it would be worthwhile flying to MIA and then taking a shuttle, taxi or Uber to FL. Thanks. |
United has nonstop flights from Newark to FLL
|
Check directly with Southwest on what airports that they fly to FLL from. You might want to fly out of Newark or even Philadelphia instead of one of the NYC airports. Newark has an Amtrak stop that connects to the EWR airport. Southwests "Wanna Get Away" fares are good and the reputation is better than Spirit.

Not sure where you are looking but United, Delta, and JetBlue, plus the Spirit you found all fly non-stop into FLL from NY area airports. |
Only checked on Kayak and Trip Advisor. May have filtered out higher prices!
Looks like it's back to the drawing board! |
I think the problem was trying to do a multi city - cruise ends on West coast, then visit to family in Texas, then home.
Minimum of 5 flights in all. Seems best (cheapest) to do one-way to FL separately. |
you can probably book NY to FL and TX to NY as an open-jaw round trip. And then book the others as one-ways.
But booking all one ways is often not more expensive these days and gives you the freedom of booking whatever times work best for you each way regardless of airline. |
NGail, some airlines - such as Southwest - don't show up on websites like Kayak and Trip Advisor. Go directly to southwest.com to check their schedule and prices (or whatever other airline).
|
Jet Blue, united, delta and Sprint all have non-stop flights to FLL from NYC area airports. Use Matrix Airfare (Matrix - ITA Software by Google) to search for flights for your planned dates of travel.
|
You can also check what a multi-city would cost: from NY to FLL and then from the West Coast arrival to the location in Texas and then from there back to NY. Do NOT assume anything about pricves until you have checked them all and on the airline sites. Doing this will probably cut Spirit out of the equation
|
YOu must have just filtered them out because they cost more, SPirit is the cheapest. Jetblue might be $50 more.
Southwest doesn't fly to FLL from LGA or JFK or EWR. They do fly once a day from LI Islip, late afternoon. At least nonstop, of course. |
We recently flew Spirit with no problems, except weather delays. I would use them again. Join their discount club and it can be super cheap, especially if you are taking several flights. I would definitely go as early as possible the day before the cruise though, just in case of delays or cancellations. |
i just booked Jet Blue one-way (a few days before the cruise) and got a pretty good price.
Will take on the rest of the trip next. So far American looks best. Thanks, all, for your help! |
Carefully read the "add on costs" on Spirit. Southwest: 2 bags checked no charge. Open seating.
|
I don't think you realize Southwest doesn't fly from anywhere but Islip and then only late in the day, so I suspect it isn't nearly as convenient. Besides, she booked JEtblue anyway, not Spirit.
|
Southwest flies from La Guardia, too, not just Islip. Glad she chose Jet Blue instead of Spirit.
