Flying PHL to DTW?
 

Here's a new kink to add to all of the joys of travelling! If you are traveling on a regional jet from PHL to DTW, your baggage may not get "chosen" to be put on the plane. This week, my luggage and about 20 of my fellow travellers was delayed 30 hours due to weight restrictions on the smaller aircraft. The fact that I had a priority tag on my suitcase (Chairman's preferred) did not help me. This problem has caused many bags to be delayed thru DTW. The folks at the airport told me that they are handling about 50 late bags a day. The solution is to carry everything on board with you. I generally do this, however, I was on a 3 day trip and I needed more work supplies.

Without going to a travel related sight like Orbitz, etc., what the heck is DTW????

I'm sorry, I only travel about 25,000 miles/year within the US.

30 HOURS? That seems excessive by any stretch of the imagination.

Did USAirways compensate you?

The staff at Detroit airport is so overworked and demoralized that I feel very badly for them. No one was offering compensation at the time that the incident occurred. When you call the US Air baggage number the wait can be up to one hour. No information is given about reimbursement except to " see the agent at the baggage claim area"
I requested compensation when I was returning home from the trip. There was no one on duty in the luggage claim area. The ticket agent spent 30 minutes on the phone with his supervisor trying to help me. He was not able to issue a reimbursement check. He gave me paperwork and on my layover in PHL I had to go to the baggage claim area and wait about an hour in line to get the check for my out of pocket expenses, and then re-enter security.
Clearly, the system in place is not working and the best approach is to carry all of your items with you. I find this difficult though because I have to carry a lot of work related items.

I always liked dtw but a few weeks ago was trying to check bags in and the area they were doing this was right next to parking garage and was marked that way. luckily i saw a sky cap and he took us downstairs and out to the street and moved us ahead of the others. very strange set up. that was nwa.
