Flying /overweight
 

I am flying to hawaii in sept. I am worried about how small the restroom is. I have flown before but had alot of layovers and never needed a restroom,but this flite is non-stop. Need no smart remarks please.

Rob don't know where you are flying from but Continental has a direct 8 hour flight from NY. If you already have a flight than I would call about the exact dimensions. If all fails than just eat and drink with limitations. Hawaii is too wonderful to miss for this inconvenience.

see that you mentioned it was non-stop. There are elderly people that deal with a similar problems all the time and they get through it so will you.

Unfortunately, asking for "no smart remarks" is never going to work here, esp. if your post isn't a "troll." <BR><BR>But take it from me, the restroom is small, even in first class. Rob, to be as delicate as possible under the circumstances, if you can remain standing, you'll probably manage. If you have to sit down, you may have a problem. There is no requirement that airliner restrooms be wheelchair accessible, so the door is probably no more than 30" wide, more or less.

Quite honestly, I'd call the airlines and ask someone to find out for me. I'm sure you can use the ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) to make them provide you with the necessary info. And NO, I'm not calling overweight people disabled by any means, I'm just using the ADA to get the action I need. It will give you some peace of mind, I'm sure.

Rob:<BR>My mom is obese and I have a terrible time getting her to travel because of that. I can tell you that I am not obese but find the bathrooms to be entirely too small. I know that you need to increase your fluids in flight, especially water for numerous health reasons. Do not cut back you may harm yourself. I hope your airline gives you good and truthful answers. Let us know how it goes.<BR>Try your best to ignore the IGNORANT people who post. I am not good at it, people cuss at you, make fun of you and <BR>well, that's a part of life in the "net". Be encouraged though because the majority of people on the travel boards that I visit are nice and fun. It just seems that the bad people are real good at being bad.<BR>Enjoy your flight!

Rob,<BR>The thing I hate the most about airplane bathrooms on a long flight is the condition they are in by the time you're only midway through the flight. For that reason, I try not to use their facilities the second half of the flight. I'd rather be a little uncomfortable. For the times it's impossible to wait, esp. when I travel with my children, I carry a little package of handwipes to sanitize whatever I have to touch.

You know, I never thought of the fact that a wheelchair can't fit into an airplane restroom. What do people in chairs do on a flight?

Anna,<BR>I really don't know how most wheelchair restricted people use the bathroom during flight, but I would think they would be ok with assistance (or most likely, traveling companion). I don't know if they retain an aisle wheelchair in cabin or not.<BR>My own mother, when she was still able to travel, has M.S. and when I traveled with her she always had a catheter...

Rob,<BR>I know what you mean, my husband and I will be traveling there around the same time, though our flight will be broken up. Because both of us are big, and not just by weight, we went the extra expense and booked first class for part of the flight. Both of us have arthritis, are tall, and big. We just couldn't face the idea of being in sardine-can seats for the entire trip. I have read that the seats in coach are 18in. wide, and that is the standard width across the buttocks while sitting. What they chose NOT to do is measure people across the shoulders, which while sitting is for the most part the WIDEST part of the body! Very unfair. This fact could apply to any man who is tall enough/big enough bone structure, no matter weight.

I don't know if seat size is necessarily "unfair" Mim, but it is certainly undesirable.<BR>I think airlines are beginning to realize people will change allegiances if they can fly confortably.<BR>I also feel that the only way things will really/maybe change, is by addressing the airlines directly (by letter, etc) and expressing your most vehement objections there, not here. (although this IS a wonderful outlet and sounding board!)

Rob,<BR><BR>My husband is 6'2" and 285 and can fit in the restroom. Are you flying coach? If so, UA has the seating that has more leg space in the first 10 rows. It sure does make a difference.

I flew to France in Jan. The plane actually had a larger bathroom in between two typical-sized ones. It was a new plane, maybe this is a new trend?
