Flying into Newark airport
I'm looking at a great price for a round-trip to NYC, but we would fly into Newark.
Are there any reasons not to do that? Seems like access to the city would be easy. Probably take a train, right? Thanks. |
Pretty easy. If that is the best price and best connections, go for it.

You can find transportation options into NYC
http://www.panynj.gov/airports/ewr-airtrain.html None are particularly convenient. We avoid Newark. Delays and cancelled flights, allegedly due to weather, are legendary. And, the place is generally just awful in every way. It would take a significant savings for me to fly into/out of Newark. |
People visiting NYC fly into Newark all the time. A simple google search for "Newark Liberty Airport" will give you links to all the different transportation options available to get you to/from the airport and NYC.
|
You might try this #: 212-777-7777. I haven't used it in a while but they used to have cars that would take you from Newark airport to Manhattan for flat rate around $45.00. The company's name was something like Dial7. I believe they have a website.
|
There's good bus and train service from Newark to NYC. If it's more the 2 people, then go for car service. Note the flat rate mentioned doesn't include tolls and tip. I think the train is about $15 each way, and the bus is maybe a tiny bit less.

I used to fly into Newark often when DD was a FA. It is just like any other getting into Manhattan. If the price is good, go for it. Transportation will be about $20 each.
|
I think it costs about $11.50 to go from EWR on the train into Penn Station in NYC.Very easy, don't have to deal with traffic.
|
>>>Delays and cancelled flights, allegedly due to weather, are legendary.<<<
From this post, I assume, that weather in Newark is completely different from weather in JFK. |
I second the recommendation for a car service. Dial 7 or Carmel. Life is MUCH nicer and easier. Their airport prices are listed on their websites and they offer discounts from time to time.
|
Same goes for JFK...

>>>Delays and cancelled flights, allegedly due to weather, are legendary.<<< From this post, I assume, that weather in Newark is completely different from weather in JFK." Yes, it can be different. This morning for example JFK and LGA had terrible delays due to high winds. Newark did not. All of the 3 main NYC airports have crummy reputations for delays. LGA is closest, but poorer choices for public transportation. JFK and Newark are about the same distance from Manhattan. Taxis and car services cost a bit more to/from Newark because of crossing state lines. Consider them all equally good or bad, unless there are significant price differences in the airfare |
Thanks, everyone, for your replies. Now I know it's ok to fly into Newark.
My trip has fallen through. The good fare is only for this weekend, and I can't get anyone to go with me. I'd be fine by myself, because I actually prefer doing solitary things (shopping....museums....taking pictures of architecture...) but I just can't shake the fear of staying alone in a hotel. |
You won't be alone--there will be people right next door.
|
For your future reference, it's much easier to fly into LaGuardia and take a $30 taxi ride to mid-town, especially if you're traveling alone and have other than minimal bags to haul.

Well, as a matter of fact - you can get very different conditions at Newark and JFK - in terms of fog, winds, amount of snow etc. And it's perfectly possible for one to have horrible delays and the other be operating much more on time. Also, they are home bases for different airlines - and depedning n where those planes are originating you can have very differnt patterns of delay. that said, none of the NYC airports are good as far as on time records - we just have to be happy it's not as bad as O'Hare. |
