Flying into Jackson Hole, WY at night
While going insane trying to find good flights and maybe use some FF miles from Boston to Jackson Hole this summer, found the cheapest flight gets into JAC at about 9:30 PM. Would we be missing something to fly in at night in way of scenery from the air? Any is there a reasonable hotel right near airport we could stay in for that night since it will be close to midnight by our Boston-set internal clocks.

Sure, the scenery is beautiful, but I wouldn't sacrifice a good airfare for it!
Arriving at 9:30 p.m. might create a problem if you are renting a car. Will the rental offices still be open? If you are renting a car, I'd call the agency at the airport directly to find out. The city of Jackson is about 10 miles from the airport, and there are plenty of motels to choose from there. And, the accommodations in the Grand Teton are not that far either. What is your itinerary once you arrive? That should determine where to stay the first night. |
We were wondering about rental car offices - so were hoping that there was a hotel close enough to airport and available taxi so we could just deal with rental car in AM. But hotel searches show closest hotels in Jackson. Itinerary is still being worked out - will likely be headed to Grand Tetons for a few days and then to Yellowstone.

As I previously suggested, call the car rental agencies at the airport. Your research is accurate. There are no hotels/motels at or near the airport. (And, who knows if cabs will be available at that hour?)
|
Thanks again - I will call. But if, no rental cars and no cabs, I think it would be a really long walk into Jackson!

Having given all this cautionary advice, I still can't help but think that there would have to be some transportation services available for arriving planes at night!

I flew into Jackson Hole airport quite late at night once and had arranged ahead of time for a van to pick us & our luggage up, there were 4 young ladies with lots of ski gear. the ride into town was only a few minutes.
Although it was many years ago, the flight into Jackson that night was magical. I wouldnt trade it for anything. I am from NJ and it was my first trip to the rocky mountains and in the dark night sky I was staring at the vague silhouttes that made up the skyline trying to figure out was mountain and what was clouds. I couldnt decipher what was what until the next morning. We woke up in our condo, pulled back the curtains and were awed by the sight of the majecstic tetons against the bright blue morning sky. |
My husband is going to call aiport this week and find out about late night transportation.
