Flying in to Tallahassee?
I'm considering flying into tallahassee in January, but from what I can see, it seems that they have a fairly small regional airport. Does anyone know what the closest large airport is- I'm thinking it may be cheaper to fly into somewhere bigger. Thank you in advance!

Tallahassee is out in the middle of nowhere, especially for a state capitol! I had to go there last spring, and I flew into Atlanta. It was about a 4 hour drive. I was also told that Tampa/St. Petersburg is about a 3 hour drive.

I went to college in Tallahassee, beautiful town- lots of trees and rolling hills.

Though I drove to Jacksonville, 150 miles away straight shot down an interstate highway, to go to the airport. Tampa and Atlanta are both a harder trip.

Rebecca, definitely check out Southwest Airlines into Jacksonville International. A friend of mine who works for an airline in Tallahassee was visiting this weekend and he said he always uses JAX when he flies as a revenue passenger.

Airfares to Tallahassee are absurd. For instance, one can fly roundtrip, Fort Lauderdale to New York City, for about half to one-third the standard fare to Tallahassee and back. And many of the flights are still on prop planes.

Unfortunately, as has been stated there are no close-by regional airports. Jacksonville is the closest, but it doesn't compare to Orlando or Tampa in number of carriers or flights.

If time isn't important but cost is, and you need to rent a car to get around Tallahassee anyway, you may consider another airport. Otherwise bite the bullet and fly into Tally.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll already be flying from a small airport (Harrisburg, PA) so I knew that 2 small airports would be costly. Hotwire can get me from Harrisburg to JAX for 188 roundtrip. I'm going to check out southwest and going into tampa too, because I will need the rental car.

Have you considered AIRTRAN? It services the Ft. Walton area, about 130 miles west. Ft walton is much closer than Atlanta, Tampa, or Orlando.

Just to update: the driving time Tampa to Tallahassee is more like 5-6 hours ... and that's over the limit by a good 10. A relative drove that route two days ago ... about five hours, and she was flying low. Ciao
