Flying in to Charleston or Savannah
 

We're planning 6 nights, 2 in Savannah and 4 in Charleston. It's about $250 more for the car going in to Savannah and out of Charleston and a little more for the flights. Is it crazy or easy enough to fly in and out of Charleston and then driving directly to Savannah? Is 2 and 4 nights the right amount of time for each?

Check Avis, they've had some special rates on a Mustang or a Prius, pickup Savannah and return Charleston. Click on their "deals" section for discounts with AARP or airline frequent flyer or Sears shoppers.

Any input on number on 2 nights in Savannah and 4 in Charleston welcome!

We discovered the same thing a few years ago (flying into Savannah added the cost without taking into account a one -way car rental), so we flew in and out of Charleston, with a few days' trip to Savannah.

If day 1 is arrival day into Savannah, you'll just have part of the afternoon there. Then a full day 2. You'd probably want the next morning and part of the afternoon as well. Then the 2 hr drive to Charleston will have you arriving there just for dinner on day 3...so 3 full days (4 nights) Charleston seems right.

I was going to say that the drive is ~~2 hours, ish, and as long as it's not a morning flight NBD. Or for that matter just a visit to SAV for a few days and drive back, etc.

Agreed you'd want at least 48 hours if this is your only visit there.

Bonaventure Cemetery and Wormsloe Plantation are nice to visit and you'll need a car for them, and some time. The Plantation I admit is mostly just the gorgeous driveway, I did wander around the grounds one day - meaning woods and view over the water - no building - but overall the driveway and front gate are very evocative of the south.

If you get a chance at all, it's worth it, I think, to look for roads with the canopy trees over them, which Wormsloe is a pretty example of a driveway but there are actual roads in SC which have them - not as many as before, though. May River Road is near my old house and it is gorgeous especially on a bright blue sky day. It's not endless canopy, and in fact I think over the years development took them down until someone realized, hey, this is historic.

FYI Savannah allows open carry - meaning go-cups! If you haven't finished your beer ask for a cup and you can walk around with it.
